    If you're 15 or 16 ...

On school days you can only work up to two hours a day, one hour before school and one hour after school. On Saturdays, you can work up to eight hours and two hours on a Sunday. In the school holidays you can work up to eight hours a day, but no more than 35 hours in a week and for two weeks in the school holiday, you cannot work at all.

Don't forget that if you want to get a full time job, you have to have left school first. If you are 16, you need to wait to leave school until the last Friday in June.

If you are under the age of 16 you have a permit issued by your local authority and signed by your employer in order to work legally.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had a Boots interview yet? I got an email this morning and have booked one for lunchtime tomorrow as I'd like to get it over with asap, but the email mentioned being on the shop floor? Are they going to make me approach people? This is my idea of hell which is why I applied to be a cashier... I need the money so I'll do it if I have to, but I really hope this isn't the case. Does anyone know what will happen?

  • Just a suggestion for work for under 16's - have you tried any cafes? Alot of my friends had cafe jobs in their last year at school (mainly saturday jobs). I know my local market (which has a million cafes) regulary employ young people. Hope this helps

I had an interview for Boots last week and yes you do have to approach people handing out baskets and leaflets-with the leaflets you've gotta get talking to the customers to show how you interact with them. Pretty easy interview anyway-its not a standard interview so you would proberly brezze through it.

Thanks for that riderross. I don't mind handing out things so much as having a prop would make it easier, at least I know what to expect now :).

  • Has anyone had an interview with HMV? I have one tomorrow. I was also wondering how often you can get a permanent job after this period?

unfortunately a lot of places wont take on anyone under the age of 16 because of all the hassle on what hours can and cant be worked. my kids did stuff like dog walking and baby sitting. my eldest son did a bit of wood carving and sold it to a local craft shop. for girls it may be worth trying local hairdressers. they sometimes have young girls to shampoo and sweep up. they dont pay great money, but if its local and you arent paying fares to get where you are going???
