  • My 15 year old daughter is desperate to earn money and has handed her CV in everywhere in our local town and surrounding area, it seems most employers are very reluctant to employ under 16's, anyone got any ideas?? It was easy to get a job when I was her age!
  • I am desparate to find more work in Liverpool as I am only working part time at the moment. I went to Liverpool One and online and to the job centre and then get very irked when I get bad service as I could be doing that job so much better and yet someone else has been chosen over me for it.
  • Hi Redhead,
I think this depends on local by-laws, in my area it is not legal to employ under 16's for anything other than paper-rounds. However it seems that some market traders are prepared to flaut the law but the pay will not be good, also some pubs will take on 15 yr olds as waiting staff.
If she is good at getting up early, a daily paper round with a local newsagent may be the way to go, especially in the run up to Christmas, as when my son did his round he used to get very good tips at Christmas.
Hope she finds something to suit.
  • My hubby works for royalmail in the xmas recruitment aspect. If you go to any Manpower agency or log in on the Manpower websites, they have a link to Royal Mail Christmas cover jobs. You can choose what hours and also they have from driving to mail sorting to administration jobs. They're recruiting now and it'll run to last week before xmas.

Be warned though, money isn't great

    Good luck xx ;)

Toys R Us always take on loads of staff this time of year. Some stores may have their quota by now but other stores really struggle to find enough staff. They also do a night shift this time of year, if that would suit some and they sometimes keep staff on til the end of January, inorder to help with their inventory. Don't expect staff discount though!
  • I applied for Boots and got through the test ok. They then sent me an email saying I should log on and choose an interview date. When I went in to the link it kept saying 'No Dates Available'. I emailed them and got no response. I then received an email at 3pm on the Thursday afternoon saying I was to attend an interview at 12 noon the next day and that I would be working on the shop floor. They didn't ask if this was suitable, didn't tell me which post it was for and still had given me no details of the shift patterns or wages! I couldn't make it at such short notice so replied to the email and tried to call them. The phone number I was given just kept ringing out - no answer and no voicemail. So eventually I figured if it was this much hard work getting to the interview did I really want to work with them - no.

Sorry for the rant folks, but feel better letting it all out. :-)

Great thread I'll try some of the others.

I did the test too and haven't heard anything from them. Maybe they think I am a lost cause! :rotfl:

I am not an expert but at a previous employer a long time ago, they had to get permission from the local council to employ a 15 year old. There were strict restrictions on how many hours they could work in a day and week. I think no more than 8 hours in a week...? (i think this is correct). This may be why she is finding it hard. From age 16 onwards it should be much easier.

I don't understand the need for these tests for entry-level positions like retail. Fine for more senior positions but for entry-level...ridiculous!

I have been on Oxford Street London today, and saw that Zara are advertising in window for Xmas staff ( some might be ongoing) at all levels - inc maangers. Also BHS seem to be recruiting as well - posters.

Macdonalds also recruiting at the mo on there, with the usual "this is not a Mcjob" posters all over the shop.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
