Over the last couple of days I have been trying to make payments using my Abbey Visa Debit Card and it kept saying it wasn't possible to make the payment at this time.Yesterday the Call Centre told me there was a problem with Debit Card payments and to wait two hours for it to be fixed. I tried again after two hours and again it didn't work but later it did and I got a confirmation page .
This morning I checked my Abbey Account and THREE payments of the same amount are showing for yesterdays date ...so where do I go now ...Do I ask Cap One if they have the payments as they are only showing ONE on my account as having been received or do I ask Abbey about it ... Right PITA...
  • I paid online on Sunday (due date was today) and the money was taken from my bank account. I logged in today to find that their system obviously didn’t update or recognise that I had made a payment (usually when you make a payment it shows up) and I had been charged a late payment fee. I sent a message using their secure messages service and this was their reply.

Thank you for contacting us about the late payment default sum on your account and requesting us to refund the late payment default sum that we've added on your account. As you've not sent a replacement payment towards your account we've added £12 late payment default sum on your account. However, we've refunded this on your account. You can see this on your October statement. If you wish to set up direct debit on your account, you need to complete and return a direct debit form to us. You can print a form off from our site, which you'll find in the 'how to pay' section. Alternatively, you can set-up a direct debit over the phone. If you need any other help please call us on 08458 400 400*. We're here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. (*Please note, calls to 0845 numbers will be charged at a local rate. The cost will vary depending on your service provider. Calls may be recorded/monitored for training purposes.)

So in other words they are refunding me without admitting guilt. :rotfl: Why else would they refund the late payment charge if they hadn’t acknowledged I had made a payment before the due date?

Oh and they've managed to refund the late payment fee which is showing on my account, but the original payment I made on Sunday is still not showing!

Well I have sent a secure message asking if they have my extra TWO payments so I'll see what they say first before contacting Abbey .

Oh !!!!!! just checked my current account and another two payments have been taken out.

This is a complete joke. You just cannot get through to them, their call centre is inept, the secure message system still says pending. The fax I sent this morning included a letter requesting receipt...
  • Hi FT
I've had nothing but grief from Capital One since day 1 some years ago. They are the reason I no longer operate a DD system anywhere in the banking world.
I always pay all my cards on line and by Bacs and follow the payment up with a check as to when it is credited to the respective account.
The only reason I keep the card active is to pee them off by making lots of use of it and paying the balance 100% each month so they make 0.
They retaliate by refusing me a credit limit increase for the last 5 years LOL.

Hi methusala. It wasn't a direct debit it was a debit card payment. There system kept saying that it failed and to try again later.. which I did... 13times over two days until it excepted.

I agree about Direct Debits, I only have one to the gym.

Oh, and also I've seen this problem before where it says "we cannot process this payment, please try again later" before.

In June it did this, and on my "pay bill" history it shows failed attempts to pay my bill with a debit card, with the final payment going through. It never took any money out on the failed attempts.

    hi,
i have had a bad experience with this one on sunday, i payed mine with debit card as i always do online the warning wasnt there then, once i had done it i got a message unable to process at the moment try later, so i did. tried again same message. on checking online with my bank the two payments had infact been debited from my debit card so i payed twice and cap 1 say they havnt got it. i do have the proof in black and white the payment and where it has gone capital one (europe), same place it always goes!! anyway im in a wrangle with them now over this and have told them straight i am not paying anymore, and i will contest any late payment fees, overlimit charges ect if this isnt sorted. i am not happy with cap1 at the moment and may cancel the card in the end.

Exactly the same happened to me. I paid £200 on Sunday and got the same. Checking today online, it still hadn't gone out, so I rang. They've told me to fax in a copy bank statement to prove it's been paid. Idiots - I'm not impressed. Their !!!! up and I'm fannying around sorting it out.

To be fair to Capital One you can pay from your current account online thing:

So basically send money to the above account using your credit card number as a reference. I will be doing it this way from now onwards.

Yes, but I don't have another £200 to send them.

I posted that message for those who want to pay their bill (by debit card) but cannot due to Capital One currently not accepting this. There is still a way of doing this online without logging into Capital One.

Clearly you shouldn't resend any more money.
