It may not be a matter for the police, but I believe that in making this horrendous mistake Capital One are leaving themselves open for legal action to be taken against them.0

Well that could well be the case but that is a totally different matter to what that other poster setmefree was suggesting . What I would suggest is that (1) A complaint be laid against Cap 1 via their Complaints Procedure ( I am assuming they have a Dept that deals with complaints) ( 2) If that is not satisfactory then either a complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service might be the next step ( but be aware that a complaint re Abbey I made to the FOS took 12 months at least to get the FOS to start work on it ) or an action under the Small Claims Court .0 -
Most of us HAVE profited from it - we've had compensations payments credited to our accounts.******** Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity *******"Always be calm and polite, and have the materials to make a bomb"0

Exactly...I'm quite sure that Cap1 fully realise that they must compensate customers for what has happened especially any bank charges for unauthorised overdrafts, unpaid cheques or direct debits etc and need to do this before the FSA/FOS get involved .
Myself I didn't lose anything .They took 2 extra payments of £21.23 but they DID get credited to my Cap1 account and I also got a payment of £25 so I'm quite happy with that .I didn't even need to ask for it .0 -

Hardly. I have got £50 so far, and that probably just pays for phone calls and fax calls alone.
I have only avoided MAJOR charges by extending my over draft - something I arrange myself, and took time.
If I had taken this cash off my credit card (as a cash advance, which is basically what they did to us), it would have charged me slightly under £200.
I expect similar amounts of compensation. If I had not acted in the way I have, the costs could be unlimited. Some of my work colleagues (who I explained my situation to) would have defaulted on their mortgage, council tax etc because of their error!0 -
can any one tell me who has experienced multiple charges what the warning was, as ive just tried to pay a sum off my card (£900) however it stated that "payment declined, please contact your debit card issuer"
i know there is pleanty in my currant account to cover it, so will go into the bank on monday to check if thers a problem with the card (though i used it last night so doubt it? unles its because ive made a few high value transactions this week that they are checking it)
the thing is i am going to just pay it by cheque in the bank tomorrow, but dont want to risk the fact that the error is a repeat of what people have had before and therefore paying two lots of £900.
i am set up to pay the minimum by dd which is due to come out in a few days and i wanted to pay this extra off as well, or do people think its best that i wait till later in the week to pay the cheque in so i can keep an eye on my currant account and also to make sure the dd is not stoppedMFW#105 - 2015 Overpaid £8095 / 2016 Overpaid £6983.24 / 2017 Overpaid £3583.12 / 2018 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2019 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2020 Overpaid £2583.12/ 2021 overpaid £1506.82 /2022 Overpaid £2975.28 / 2023 Overpaid £2677.30 / 2024 Overpaid £2173.61 Total OP since mortgage started in 2015 = £37,286.86 2025 MFW target £1700, payments to date at April 2025 - £1712.07..0 -

If I remember correctly you need to set up a Payment Account on your Cap1 account beforehand . I'm sure when I tried to do that it would accept my Abbey Visa Debit Card but would NOT accept my Nationwide Visa Debit Card and the message you are getting is what I got .
If you def'y want to use that particular card then I would suggest that you go to online banking for your bank account and set up a payment arrangement to Cap1 and you can then make payments additional to the direct debit as and when you want to.0 -
