  • Don't worry...I'll find something else to get in a flap about soon!

Wey hey. Way to go shopgirl on the payment.

It would be interesting if you had the old completion date and could compare that with the effect the new upped payment has on the completion date. It will make some difference. You may not find out until you get your next annual statement, if you don't get a confirmation letter though.

Something else to flap about? How about working on a mortgage free goal date?

I like seeing what other people have set as targets...

    No pressure then!!!!

Well...here is the story so far...My mortgage currently stands at 27yrs 5 months (30 year mortgage), which would make me 60 when I finish paying it all off! That is a scary thought - I was hoping to not be working then - no hope!!! My flat was kind of a (very expensive!) 30th birthday present to myself.

My initial (and less scary) plan is to get it down the extra 5 years, so effectively make it a 25yr term. Obviously, in the long term I intend to be shot of it long before that, but I think that, for me (as you know - a bit scatty and disorganised:p )it's a good place to start. My mortgage ties me in for another 2 1/2 years, and I'll obviously be looking for a grand deal after that (I will be bothereing you all - if you're still here - for advice). Until then I'll be chipping away as much as possible.

You're a grand bunch on here and you all make me feel like being mortgage free isn't just some riduculous dream!!!:T

  • Speaking of paying money into other people's mortgages, I recently went into a Nationwide branch to pay a cheque in and while I was there I made an overpayment on the mortgage.

I'm sad enough to know my mortgage account off the top of my head (11 digits) - I rattled it off and this didn't seem to impress the girl behind the counter.

    Hi Shopgirl,
    So you're about 33 ;)

I got on the mortgage treadmill at age 26 and I'm hoping to get off when I'm 42. I'd love to bring that down to 40, but it isn't going to happen.

For the numbers on the mortgage for our current house to work, I had to go back to a 25 year term, meaning it was meant to finish in 2029, when I was 59

I'm sure you'll easily knock 5 years off. It seems like such a mountain to climb, but as you make those first few steps, it slowly gets easier and easier.

Can't understand why!!! Maybe she would have been more impressed if those 11 digits was your account balance and not your account number!;)
