Hi, we had the Sainsbury's 4p jar last week, I added chicken and peppers. I thought the taste was a little too harsh when I was cooking it, so I added some homemade yoghurt, it smoothed the taste and made it lovely and creamy, very delish, will definately be having it again. :rotfl::rotfl:

What's the difference between these curry sauces and just using 2 big spoons of curry powder mixed with hot water?

The curry powder should be fried off really as raw spices can be a bit nasty on the stomach. The (Tesco) ingredients for the sauce are below

Water, Tomato Pur!e, Onion (10%), Vegetable Oil, Sugar, Modified Maize Starch, Wheat Flour, Mango Chutney, Spices (contains Celery), Sultana (1.5%), Salt, Acidity Regulator (Citric Acid), Garlic Powder.
Mango Chutney contains: Sugar, Mango, Salt, Acetic Acid, Garlic, Chilli, GingerThe essential bits and translated ingredients of that are

Tomato puree; fried onions; cornflour/plain flour (cornflour for ease); Mango Chutney, sultanas and garlic.

so you can see that there's more to it than just spices and water!:D

It should be noted that all ingredients from the onion to the sultana (I love that :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:- you know it means one when it's only 1.5%!) are less than 10% of the sauce and I really worry about there being more sugar than mango chutney which should, together with the tomato puree and the sultana, be the main sweetening element. Shouldn't be too difficult to knock up but you're not likely to make it for 4p! There are better curry sauce recipies out there.

I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...

It's only 4p for a jar that you can use for jam, chutney or whatever, but you don't want to waste the contents.
Anyway, I had curry tonight. I fried off some onions, peppers and chopped chicken, then added 2 jars of asda cs. To this I added 2chopped apples, some extra sultanas and dried banana. Left it to cook then before serving I added 2tablespoonfulls of mango chutney and some yogurt.
All in all I was only using up reduced to clear meat and some bits and pieces I already had in the fridge/cupboard. There's enough to do 3or even 4 of us for another 2 meals. With this we had savoury rice, and we would have had naan bread to help it stretch even further, but I didn't have a recipe for naan bread.
Can't work out the total cost, but I did it all in the remoska, so that would be cheap on the leccy as well.

  • we had it on friday after I managed to track it down in the bottom shelf at Mr Ts.

Just fried some onions, fired some chicken, added some drained chopped tomotoes, then the sauce, added some cooked peas, and 15 mins later served with rice and popadoms. Other half thought I had gone to the take away:) I have hidden the cans at the back of the cupboard as I know he wont eat it if he knows they only cost 4p!

    Hi

With mine i put leftover chicken, onions , diced potatoes and any other veg that needs using up in the slowcooker. I pour 2 tins of curry sauce and 1 tin of milk over it ( Ds2 finds it a bit spicy otherwise) and leave it to do it's thing. It's quite tasty actually.

We tried this out last week [Mr T version]. OH added turkey breast and loads of veg and we had it with naan. He said it needed extra liquid adding to make it go far enough for 3. I think I read somewhere here that it could be added to soup eg mulligatawny. Normally I either make up a sauce using curry powder and creme fraiche or the Patak's paste but it seemed to make a good standby. I liked the 1.5% sultanas aswell. Don't think I'll be relying on it to provide one of my five a day at that rate!!

Thanks for this thread - I have to say I had no idea there was curry sauce for that price! And, as you say, the jars are very useful. Stock up time I think from Sainsbury's!

  • I put it in a curry, or sometimes put it in a pie.
  • Has anyone tried adding veg stock to it? I do this with Tesco korma sauce for vegetable curry and that's lush! But didn't know if this would work with the curry sauce, I have quite a few in the cupboard as also thought they seemed handy!
