Does ANYONE know of a 1% cashback credit card that is available to NEW customers? A copy of the web address would be appreciated by us all.

    Cheers
Hi I have recently had this problem!! (see my thread) I thought about going for the smile card which is 0.5% back on everything but ended up going with the John Lewis partnership card because it gives me 1% back on JL + waitrose shopping and 0.5% everywhere else. The only downside with partnership card is the cashback is in vouchers but with Smile card you get the 0.5% taken off your bill which could be handy.

How many times have I seen that written by people who have consequently suffered? Never never assume anything.
  • I have had my AMEX for about 2 weeks now.
  • It's surprising that the Barclaycard 4% cashback card is not on the Best Cashback Card article, but given that you only see it if you go the barclays website, maybe not.

The link is http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/barclays_landing/platinum528b.html?TC=QXIRP19193. Or if that does not work, go to the Barclays website, select Credit Card, and then on the left "with Cashback". If you go to the Barclaycard website direct, you won't find the Cashback card.

Unfortunately - from personal experience, it's only available to new customers only. I am (was) a Barclaycard customer since 1992, spending probably £1-2K+ on the card ever month; they used to give me 4% cashback a while back, but it was withdrawn about 6 months ago. Since then, I've requested for Cashback, but was told that management removed Cashback from all their cards (except their 'Pulse' card). I accepted this, but got the Amex 5% card (my first 'second' card since the 17 years of having a CC) as my new main card, but keeping Barclaycard as the fallback VISA card.

I found the 4% BCard by accident whilst logging into my Barclays online banking. On calling BCard customer services, they told me that I would not be able to get that card, it's for new customers only. In the end, I have cancelled my 17 year account with them over this.

Stupid that they are chasing new customers (who may not be as credit worthy as I), but willing to lose a 17 year old account that's never had a problem.

I know that my wife can apply, and I be the second card holder, but I'm stubborn

It's a good deal but its only till the 1st of March and limited to £30 a month. The most you'd make is around £60. With the Amex 5% cashback you could get up to £200 over 3 months.
  • Actually, it's a lot worse than this!

I overcame my stubborness, and applied for the 4% BCard Cashback for my wife. Was successful, and it note that "your Contactless Credit Card" will arrive in the post.

This looked wrong, so I phoned the customer services, and queried this. They confirmed that the card is actually a Cashback card, but - the cashback was 4% to 1st Jan 2009 and not 1 Mar 2009. I pointed out that this was wrong, and that the website showed (and still does) 4% to 1st Mar 2009. (It's 0.5% up to 31st Dec 2010 after that)

I went through to Customer Loyalty and argued again, but they were not prepared/able to extend it to 1st Mar 2009. I pointed out to them that given today was the 18th, that the card would probably not arrive till the New Year anyway, making it completely pointless. The CSA did say that I could post in a print out of the web page, but I said I wasn't prepared to waste my time on it - that they should be able to honour it or look at the page themselves to confirm.

In the end, we've cancelled my wife's BCard as well.

So, we've managed to cancel 2 BCard accounts today!
  • For those who want to apply for the AMEX card. Go through Top Cashback and get £34 incentive also.

My new years resolution. To shop for everything on my new AMEX cashback card, but first looking through Top Cashback for any cashback incentives. Hopefully all these savings will pay for my holiday next year or all my XMAS shopping.

...mind you, I had to ask Amex to check that I got my full 5% joining bonus when the first £204 was credited to my account. After asking for a breakdown of the way my cashback was calculated, a futher £71 appearred. Coincidence perhaps...

I note that this cashback is simply credited to the account hence is worth 40% more to me as income tax is not deducted. Woohoo!

  • As A n L are past masters at not letting you know when T n Cs change can anyone tell me the current cashback rate for an A n L card against a barclaycard goldfish card or a halifax 1 card? Which gives the best terms? Or should i go back to Amex? I have three of these cards gathering dust in my wallet. First time ive posted so i may never find the thread again! But would be grateful for replies...
