OK so this card is by Shell, from Citi. However, it's still not the best deal:
    • You are restricted to Shell and only to get the 3% introductory cashback for the first 60 days
    • If you use sites such as http://www.petrolprices.com/, then you will know that Shell if ever/never come out as a best price
Combine that with specialised alternatives such as the Abbey Credit Card that offers 3% introductory cashback for the first six months on all food and fuel:

Yes although you also get 1% when you use your card anywhere else. I am not sure if you get this if you dont fuill up at shell?

I have actually applied for abbey myself. If this card does give 1% anywhere without filling up at shell at all then it is good for people who are not eligable for AMEX.

I've currently got the Egg Money Card, have used it for a good 4 or 5 years now and despite only having 1% cash back, usually have an annual payment of around £80.

It's a brilliant, flexible card which works like a pre-pay card but getting cash out of ATMs is free and it's free to join, run and spend.

I don't know why Martin doesn't even mention it in his current 'Top Cashback Cards' or 'Top Pre-pay Cards' guide.

Is there something I should know?!!

    Best wishes,
    John

Is that not the citi card in my post above?

No, my card is not a shell one, though I do use a shell petrol station, when the special deal on my citi card giving 3% cashback on all purchases up to £3000 per month runs out at the end of March and reverts to a normal 1% I shall apply for a shell card to get the extra 2% on fuel.
  • Hi.
I don't know if anyone else has had this experience.
I got the capital one 4% cashback deal about a year ago.
I'm convinced I actually started spending more because of it.
The term 'cashback' gives you the feeling you are actually getting money everytime you use it. Of course, you're not. It's a discount card, effectively.

    Anyone else found this ?

Incidentally - not too used to forums - so sorry if this on the wrong thread.
  • First time I've done this so not sure if doing it right but here goes.

I'm in the process of closing my AMEX account. Basically I missed how low the credit limit was (print was a bit tiny) and have been charged for going over that limit. I am furious! My VISA card (which I pay off every month) has a much higher limit. So I just assumed the AMEX would be the same. I'm currently paying out large sums of savings for building improvements, so it seemed to make sense to use a AMEX card and get lots of cashback. I must be the only person in the country to lose money on a cash back card within the first month! What a fool I feel. They don't appear to be prepared to be understanding of my error so I'm afraid they have lost a customer.

Credit limits really should be in large bold text at the top of communications not small print at the bottom.
  • American express - I've just realised they only give the 5% cash back after 12 months ! What a flipping con ! The implication of the adverts is you get it straight away. I won't be using mine any more but will switch to the MBNA Sony card - they give points for usage. I earned enough for a nice digital camera a few months ago.

did you not think to check what limit they had given you? Its the first thing I would do when I recieved the card and associated info.
  • I've got the halifax 1% cashback card - not brilliant %, but I've only had it for about 2 and a half months and nearly earned £10!

You can claim in back in £15 denominations, but what they don't tell you until you get your final documents (and I did check back through my paperwork) is that they only credit the £15 back to the card.

And, unlike the Amex card, you can claim it back as soon as you get to £15, you don't need to wait for 12 months. Though I think if you leave it for 13 months you get a bonus % on the cashback earned.

Oh well, better than a slap in the face!
  • I have had my AMEX for about 2 weeks now, and think the offer is fantastic. I have also been surprised by how many places actually accept the card. So far I have only found one place that wouldn't take it, which was a bar in Covent Garden. I have stopped spending on my Barclaycard since I received it, and now only use it as a backup for places that don't accept AMEX.
    Cashback Earnt so far in 2009: AMEX £133.93, wepromiseto.co.uk £67.07, Barclaycard £25, MobilePhoneExchange: £28. TOTAL: £254.00
  • I've been using my AMEX Blue for about 6 years now and have been happy with their offer. I use a Discover card as a backup for those that don't take AMEX or for shopping at small businesses (since AMEX really whacks the retailer).
