  • What about the Utility Warehouse Cashback card, I haven't seen it mentioned here. It also gives 5% off all your shopping including fuel, is a mastercard, and can be used in scores of high street shops (Sainsbury's, Boots, Halfords, to name but a few). I can give more details if anyone is interested.
  • icon8.gif I applied for the American Express Card. I earn over £32,000 per year. I don't have a mortgage. I feel my credit score is excellent as I pay my bills off every month. When the American Express Card came I was only given £700 credit limit. When I rang to ask why this was so low I was told I did not have a credit history as I pay all my bills every month. I was going to buy a new kitchen and use my savings to pay off the credit card. So Martin the American Express Card paying back 5% is not such a good deal for someone like me who pays their bills evey month. Also the 5% cash back is not paid until the end of 12 months.
    Kind regards

  • Someone asked this question further up but no one answered so I'm hoping if I ask again you might be able to help...

I applied for the Amex Platinum card in early 2008 so I could get cashback on the cost of my new kitchen. So I haven't had it a year yet and I haven't received my cashback. I'm just wondering if it is possible to cancel the 1st card and get a 2nd card so I can put my Christmas shopping on it and get 5% cashback. Or do I need to wait until I've had it a year. Or is it not possible to do that even then?
  • I applied for the Amex card and they rejected me. I earn 30K (or will, only four months into my jobso far) but never had a card or a loan before, no car expenses, paid off my overdraft with my first paycheque this summer and I rent my flat.

Is this rejection going to affect my chances of getting another card? And also, what's the next best option at the mo?

This is misleading. We often see misleading info posted about the uw here from their reps.

It is not a "cashback" card - it is a prepayment hybrid mastercard.

You have to load it with cash before using it.

You don't get "5% off all your shopping". You only get a discount off your other bills with the uw. But the discount is only credited when you use the card at their nominated retailers (of which there are about 25, not "scores").

The card costs £10, is only available to uw customers, plus there are ongoing monthly charges as well as a charge every time you top it up.

There is none of the usual mastercard protection with this card - if the uw goes bust, you would lose any money you had loaded on to the card but not used, and it is not covered by the usual credit card legislation should a purchase go wrong.
  • Nobody seems to have mentioned the citi bank card. The one I have pays 1% cash back on up to £3000 per month. Any spend over this I put on my capital one card which also gives 1%, but has about 14 days less free credit.
The real interesting thing on the citi card is that last month I got a letter with attached cheques, which said that as I was a good customer I could cash one of these cheques for a fee of 3% (£15) and only pay interest at 5.85% until the loan was cleared. I banked a £500 cheque and put it in my Coventry BS at 6.4%. But here comes the rub, they would give me cash back at 3% on my purchases again up to £3000 a month until April 1st.

I paid of my loan by the normal direct debit, it attracted £3.36 interest, so the total cost of doing this is £18.36. I expect to get cash back for 5 months ie £450, if I take off the £150 I would have got anyway, it means I should make £300, for an outlay of £18.36, for doing basically nothing this also ignores the interest on £500 for one month in the Coventry BS.

Hence I disagree with Martins' comment about never take out a loan on your credit card. Though of course you need to pay it off asap and do your sums.

Firstly, both the Citi and Capital One credit cards must not be open to new applicants, as neither are available via their website. This is why it will not appear in the Top Cashback Cards.

I found this citi shell card here
    http://www.shell.co.uk/home/content/gbr/products_services/on_the_road/card_services/shell_credit_card_from_citi/smc/

Enjoy 3% Cash Back on Shell fuel purchases and 1% when you use your card anywhere else - T&Cs apply

Now the only thing im not sure is if you dont fill up at shell im not sure you still get the 1% cashback.

The general advice of paying off the outstanding balance in full on cashback cards is always sound advice. Your tactic is relying on your future additional spending to make the transfer worthwhile and to be honest, I'm not sure if some of your figures add up.

You are probably right about the cards not being available to new customers, but my point was that the loan at 5.85% and 3% cashback was for existing customers. Also my figures do add up, I put virtually all my spend on credit card (paying it off in full each month), and easily spend over £3000 a month. Last year on cash back I got back over £1000. (Capital one had an introductory offer of 4%). When my spend reaches £3000, on the citi card, I stop using it and use my capital one card.

Is that not the citi card in my post above?

I note in the Terms & Conditions that the inital 6% and following 3% discount on Shell fuel only applies if the price is above £1/litre - so useless now!

I can't find this info anywhere in the T&Cs effective from 2nd December 2008.

One thing I have spotted is point 2.4.

Please note that the maximum cash back that can be earned each year for cardholders with an account opened prior to July 2007 is (i) £150 in respect of fuel purcases made at Shell petrol stations after which you will receive 0%, and (ii) £100 in respect of all other qualifying transactions.

My total cashback to date is over £130 on this card but the statement only shows total cashback and not how it is constituted.
