I doubt very much that you could pay your mortgage with any credit card, as you would be paying credit with credit.

Plenty of reports of success in paying mortgage payments with a Credit Card but they would appear to need some initial persuading usually.

No responsible lender should be encouraging this, if it is possible.

Theres a guy on the stoozing site who has been regularly paying Northern Rock by Credit Card. A very useful way to max out a slow stooze card if you can do it.
  • I have a Tesco credit card and earn Clubcard points on purchases. Given that a £1 Clubcard vuocher is effectively worth £4 on its deals, has anyone worked out how this compares?
  • I have a capital one credit card which gives me 1% cash back.
  • I think there are some points of confusion remaining from earlier posts re the Shell Citi Card. (Apologies if I have missed a subsequent answer - I did have a quick check through!)

    1. If you buy fuel from petrol stations other than Shell, this falls into the "1% everywhere else" category, although of course you will have to buy from Shell at some point to actually claim the "cashback".

    2. The fact that petrol is now under £1 per litre is irrelevant, you still get the same % cashback. I think they originally advertised it as 6 PENCE off per litre with a note that it was related to the cost per litre being at least £1 (because it was actually 6% not 6p).

    3. Re an earlier post that Shell is rarely/never the cheapest - this is not my experience in many locations around the country, Shell is often on a par with supermarkets or maybe 1p more at most - certainly with a 3% discount it will be cheaper than anything apart from the occasional supermarkets' 5p special offer. I routinely find that Shell is cheaper than other non-supermarket petrol stations.

Although this isn't strictly a "cashback" card, if you buy from Shell anyway it is one of the best deals around so I'm surprised it isn't mentioned in the cashback or rewards credit cards articles.

With a Barclaycard Platinum card that gives me 2% off at all supermarkets and petrol stations, Shell giving me 3-6% off their petrol and 1% off everything else, and 3 months of buying with 5% cashback via Amex, I've made quite a nice bit of cash this year, just by buying what I would have bought anyway with some different pieces of plastic - thanks mostly to the advice on this site! :)
  • You might already be aware of this, but you are not limited to only one 5% cashback Amex card. I applied for a new one (via TopCashback for £34) in early January, it was approved, the dormant (but waiting for cashback) 5% card was still open. They asked me if I wanted to transfer my credit limit over to my new card which I did. Since then I've received the cashback and cancelled my old card and am now using my new card and building up cashback on it. After three months I'll stop using it. My husband will then apply for another one. His £200 cashback (on his first Amex cashback card) is payable in March.
    Happy days.

Hmmm. Northern Rock, very well known for being responsible :rotfl:

Only with a positive balance on the Egg Money card. I had the same conversation with Northern Rock:

"Paying credit with credit is against our policy"
"But I have a positivie balance"
    "Oh.... okay then"

I could try this on with another card, but at the moment I'm in a comfortable position and trying to wind things down to smarten up my credit record.

Absolutely agree with all of this. Till recently we have used the Amex platinum card, but since we got it about 3 years ago the CB rates have fallen quite a bit. I got the shell card in November. We each have a card and put absolutely everything on it (Note that it is a Mastercard so is welcomed everywhere whereas Amex is not - our local Co-Op stopped taking Amex just before Christmas). To give an idea of the level of initial CB you can expect, my latest bill is for £1346 and a CB credit of £17 is carried over to next month's statement and will come straight off the bottom line so long as we spend at least that much on Shell petrol in the mean time. This month we had a credit of over £23. If you own a car, buy a tank of fuel a month and live not too far from a Shell fuel station get one and put ALL your spends on it - it's a no brainer!!! Just one thing to remember though - make sure you set up a DD to pay off the whole balance every month, just takes one phone call after you recieve your card(s). GO FOR IT :rotfl:

  • After taking Martin's advice on this weeks tips, applied online for an AMEX card only to be told "we are unable to give you an instant decision. You will receive notification by post informing you of the status of your application within the next 10 business days".
I'm taking that to mean I will miss getting the 5% cashback on the first £4k which is due to expire on 10th Feb and will only (possibly) get the 5% on the first £2K instead.
Do you think this is a delaying tactic?
