The payout is monthly via vouchers you can use on any spend via paypal - I've had £200 of vouchers so far this year!

Their site says every 500 points they send you a £5 paypal voucher. So if I buy something for £1000 do I get a £10 voucher or 2 £5 vouchers? And can you combine all your collected £5 vouchers to spend on one purchase or can you only spend each £5 voucher on separate transactions?

Surprised this card has never been mentioned on MSE
  • Hi there,

My husband and I are about to undertake a project on a new house and will be spending between £15-20k on materials and labour. We've been thinking about putting as much as we can on a rewards credit card and paying it off in full month by month so that we can get some rewards for this large expenditure. The project will have a quick turnaround and therefore, its not worth putting the cash into savings whilst we spend. We're not worried about the rewards being cashback or shopping points/vouchers but just wanted some advice as to which current option would get us the most return.

Any advice would be gratefully received,

    Hpemb

If I was spending that amount, I'd be looking for a discount for cash.
  • Unfortunately its not one supplier or builder we are paying as we are project managing it ourselves. Therefore the money will be spent here and there when the purchases are made individually, so a discount for cash wouldn't really get us that much. We will be using trade discounts etc when making the purchases, but I just thought that if we made them all through one card we may be able to get some kind of monetary recognition for the full amount in the form of shopping vouchers or the like.

There is a deal on with capital one for 5% for 3 months. That might suit you.

I have just received my AA Members Credit Card. It has 3% cash back on fuel (up to £2000/year spend), that’s the best I have found for fuel.

Thanks Steve for pointing out this members only offer!

    My cashback (cb) card rundown:

AA 3% cashback Fuel (members only at today's date)

Halifax Clairity 1.66% (£5cb if guaranteed to spend £300 in statement month)

MBNA 1.5% any Supermarket shop (but generally shop at Lidl as much, much cheaper and good quality)

Capital One 1% all other spend

Also, just a note that Halifax Clarity gives perfect conversion fees on foreign currencies and neither adds other fees nor loads the exchange rate (ie unlike paypal). It's like buying in sterling except you're not!

    hi

i applied for the capital one cashback card with 0% interest free until march 2012 via the link on the website but am currently in the process of disputing the interest free period with them.

they claim that the link is old and that the offer expired a while back.

the issue is currently under investigation and i should hear this week whether or not they will honour the approved application.

has anyone had success with getting the 0% period on a recent application?
  • Hi llywmog,

Thanks for letting us know. When did you apply?

If you used the link in our weekly email, that takes you via a comparison site which has got the deal. If you went directly to capital one, the offer is not currently on, as far as i know.

    Thanks

I have an existing CapitalOne platinum card (£6k limit, unused) which occasionally gives good offers (2% cashback on all spend in December 2010) but otherwise pretty standard.

I would prefer the new 5% cashback card so I asked whether it could be changed over - answer - NO

I also and specifically asked whether having the existing card would automatically prevent me from being accepted.

CS reply was evasive and said: I’m unable to tell you more about the criteria we use, as this has to remain confidential to be effective.

So - has anyone been accepted even though they already have a CapitalOne card?

I'm beginning to think the Capital One 5% card is a bit of a con, which is being used to trawl for applications for their other cards.
I also have an unused card (15000 credit) but I make most payments by debit card.
When I did use a credit card I paid it off in full.
I have a good salary (3 times the Capital One requirement) and a London home with no mortgage.
No debts or loans but considerable investments and savings. My credit record is perfect.

However, I thought the 5% cashback would be useful and applied.
Instead I was offered a Capital One card with 35% APR.
