Hi, this is my first post to MSE! Anyway, just been looking into cashback credit cards for pertol and supermarkets (MBNA Amex) but wasn't sure if you will get charged a 'cash withdrawal fee' from the credit card if you get cashback from the till when you buy your goods? Anyone know what happens in this scenario? Thanks.
You can't (or in theory you shouldn't be able to) get cashback at the till from a credit card.

Can anyone tell me if the Capital One World MasterCard cashback card has the facility to set up a 'pay off in full each month' direct debit on it?

    Thanks.

I have heard that Wilkinsons do this and I believe they put it through as a purchase.
They might not be meant to be doing it but others on MSE have reported it AND checked with the manager (so not rougue checkout operators).

  • I was wondering if anyone knew how the sale of the Egg credit cards to Barclaycard would affect the cash back?

I'm a heavy user of my Egg money card and if Barclaycard withdraw the service I will look to get a different cashback card.

    Thanks

Interesting question. I had a Barclaycard around 20 years ago. I had money problems back then, and got in to arrears. They said I wouldn't be able to get a card again. Sure enough, and despite sorting all my money issues out a long time ago, I applied a few times over the years for a Barclaycard and was turned down, despite now having a Barclays/Woolwich mortgage and linked current account (oh the irony!) On reading Egg's notes on the transfer, I am expecting Barclaycard to tell me I 'don't fulfil their lending criteria' and that they want to close my account.

As for the cashback issue, I expect Barclaycard will have to honour the amount outstanding at the time of the transfer (unless Egg pays this in to the accounts before they are transferred over to Barclaycard) but I can't really imagine Barclaycard will continue paying the 1% cashback. I guess time will tell!

Suggest it would be wise to consider the other cashback cards in Martin's article.

Edit - just got this reply from Egg via secure message:

"At this moment in time the Egg Money product will run as it is until Barclaycard tell us otherwise. Therefore currently your cash back will accrue and be paid as normal. If this changes you'd be informed about this.

    Thanks for your message."

I have a tesco club credit card and an Amex cashback card. in order to obtain both optimum clubcard points and cashback would it be possible to pay the initial balance with either card???

Beware of the AMEX cashback card - The terms and conditions have changed.

You are required to spend £3000 of qualifying spend in the year - this is not just spending £3000 - every transaction is rounded down to the nearest pound - for example if you use this card to do all of your spending make sure the ammounts are large as if you spend 0.99p 3300 times the yearly spend will be Zero and no cashback will be paid.

I have just resolved my dispute with them and they eventually paid out only after a number of calls and letting them know my next complaint would be to the FSA.
