Dates on eggs / how long do they keep for?

A thread came up about this just last week (or the week before).
I don't keep my eggs in the fridge, but there was a link to the fsa where they say that you should keep them in the fridge.
Whether you keep them in the fridge or not, you should use them at room temp.0 -

Delia recommends in the fridge, in the carboard carton to stop smells permeating them.
However, when you're cooking with eggs, they work much better if they're at room temperature. If you go through a lot quickly then keep them out, but if you don't - keep them in the fridge, taking a couple out when you want to bake with them a few hours beforehand.0 -
if they were meant to be kept in the fridge, then supermarkets would store them in a fridge, rather than on a shelf

I keep mine in the fridge, only because when the lived in the larder on on the counter top, they'd get stuff dropped on the box and break!0

Just gone to make a cake and discovered the eggs had a best before of yesterday. Now ordinarily, BBE I tend to ignore, but am wary of some things, eggs being one.
What are your thoughts, my instinct says fine as it will baked?A smile costs little but creates much0 -
I'd crack them in a bowl & if they don't smell I'd use them.0
