Dates on eggs / how long do they keep for?

I ate two eggs this morning that had a sell by date of 2 August and they were fine. I don't worry about sell by dates too much, preferring to use my senses as a check, however husband is rabid and will chuck out stuff one day past the sell by date. Cue lots of arguments!0

Past-their-sell-by-date eggs can be used as hair conditioner: as I have just done with one.
Better than chucking!0 -
I'm like mrbadexample, I don't even notice until they're weeks out of date. And surely the float test only indicates that the egg is old/stale not necessarily off?
In all my years ( and there have been a few) I have never had a bad egg. Some that were distinctly tired, and some I wouldn't use for baking a cake when I want a decent rise, but never one that was inedible. Guess I'm luckier than I thought
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
Sorry but this is just wasteful, as others have said, crack it into another container, like a cup, if an egg is off you will soon smell it and maybe gag
If it is not off, regardless of floating, date etc, it is fine to eat it
Fair point.I'll do this in future.
ETA Not that eggs have a chance to go off with me....0 -
Just used up eggs with a sell-by of 26 July...I broke them individually into a cup first, though!!import this0

The eggs in my fridge have got a bbf date of 28th July at the moment. DS and I had boiled eggs for breakfast on Sat, they were fine.
I always crack eggs into a seperate container first, my Mum always did and thought it was what every one did. Was shocked when DH just cracked into the pan

How out of date would you eat eggs?
18/08/11?
Going to dunk them....
ETA they are all staying on the bottom, but some are tilted up.0 -
Another question, how long do you keep smoked rashers after you have opened them?0
-
I don't bother with use by dates for eggs - if I put them in water and they float then they get binned, but if they still sink (even if they tilt upwards) then I'd still use them.
If the bacon is raw then I wouldn't leave it more than a day or so after opening.0 -
as above and use the 'nose ' test on the bacon0
