  • I've eaten eggs a couple of weeks after their sellby date, and they've been fine. I always refridgerate them though.

I never check the date on eggs, I'm a dunker too ;) anything that doesn't float gets eaten.
bacon: again, smell test. you'll KNOW if it's gone off.

Dunk test for eggs. They'll be fine as long as they stay on or near the bottom.

Rashers? I buy big packs of bacon and a pack lasts a week normally once opened. I keep it in a tupperware though, in the fridge. If it smells okay it's fine. Green, slimey and smelly? In the bin.

I dunk test eggs. We've just had some bacon that came camping with us last weekend so wasn't in a fridge for 3 days. It was fine.

I poached them, but they didn't seem right. So I threw them. Maybe they would have been ok for scrambling or baking.

I had them 6 months after the best before date. Not for poaching though just frying. I don't think I would trust the rather low temperatures used for poaching. No sunny side up either. Ended up a bit rubbery but they were OK. No smell after cracking into glass then I use them.

  • I use the "dunk" test on all eggs, regardless of whether they're in date or not, after having a nasty experience where I went to fry an egg that was well before the use by date and was met with a slimy, green, stinking egg! Longest I've used eggs after their use by date is 4 weeks and they've been fine.
Going to get to grips with food shopping again, starting February!

No, they need to be really, really fresh for poaching.

MMmmm, I fancy poached eggs now.
