It happens a lot Collumpster. I've lost count of the amount of women I know who have gone to the doctor/midwife/hospital all excited and come away deflated and upset due to lack of general enthusiasm from the healthcare worker they've seen.
It's all in a days work for many of them but there are a great many wonderful midwives out there and I'm sure you'll see one soon at antenatal that will share your enthusiasmJust run, run and keep on running!0 -

My GP didn't even ask me which test I'd used, just asked when my last period was & told me the projected due date, which I told her was impossible but she wouldn't belive me! After all, what do I know, I was just there when Spud was conceived:rolleyes: Up until the scan I could have been completely wrong, I must admit I would have been a bit more reassured if someone had taken steps to actually confirm that I was really pregnant!Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p
In England we have Mothering Sunday & Father Christmas, Mothers day & Santa Clause are American merchandising tricks:mad: Demonstrate pride in your heirtage by getting it right please people!0 -
well, we're all excited for you here on MSE!!
my doctors do insist on their own pregnancy test AND they say congratulations to you when it's positive (i assume there must be another procedure if you're not happy about it, maybe the termination clinics do the pregnancy confirmation themselves). i got the phone result and was told to come in and collect some green notes and i was congratulated and even smiled at lol! yes it is all in a days work but still, it's one of the few happy things they get to deal with, at least you're not ill and it IS exciting to be having baby.
and how on earth would you know that you were supposed to be taking folic acid? i hadn't heard of it before my first pregnancy, i was given it for a few weeks, up til week 12 and was told that it's still worth taking. there's probably enough in a multivitamin if you've been taking one. also, you should stop taking any vitamins that contain vit A, and avoid soft cheeses and fish containing mercury. mumomega is a safe omega 3 supplement in pregnancy. emma's diary or bounty both have websites and the midwife should also give you their booklets with all the info you need.
i also bought the miriam stoppard book - conception, pregnancy and birth. i think it was £17.99 from mothercare. i wanted to know everything but the midwife wasn't going to do her first visit until i was 13 weeks pregnant.
congratulations again, it really is exciting - i'm excited for you and i don't even know you lol! *HUGS*52% tight0 -
Thanks jellyhead,
I've got my 1st Midwife Apt on Friday afternoon so hopefully that will go well.
Ohh just a quickie about soft cheese (Excuse me for being thick) I know about Brie and things like that, but what about Philadelphia and Dairy Lea cheese spread?
I have it on toast in the morning but haven't dared eat i in case i shouldn't be0 -
Philidalphia and Dairylea are fine. It's unpastuerized cheeses that are off limits for now due to salmonella risks. Also Liver/pate as they contain vitamin e which isn't good for unborn baby. You're also advised to avoid shellfish (slamonella again) raw eggs and limit your intake of tuna (due to mercury levels).
Mmmmmm... crumpets with butter and philidalphia! I LIVED on them when I was preggersJust run, run and keep on running!0 -
Bum, does that mean i have to cut down on my tuna mayo pasta lunches??
I read on the Bounty website that shop brought Mayo was ok but not to eat home made, i asked my (cough) Doctor but she said that she didn't know and it was probaly true due to legal implications but she couldn't state for sure !!!
Anyone know for sure, it's the only thing that i really can't go without i live on Hellmans.0 -
Home made mayo contains raw egg which carries a samonella risk, jar stuff is fine. Salmonella doesn't actually harm your baby but it can make you very poorly which isn't good when you're pregnant.
You can still have your tuna sandwiches but not every day. I'm not sure of the actual guidelines but it's something like one or two tins a week.
Your doctor sounds useless!Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
to avoid mercury affecting the development of baby you should stick to 2 tins of tuna a week, but a lunch probably contains less than a tin. swordfish etc. is included, i wanted to eat it all day but couldn't - boohoo! if you usually take an omega 3 tablet you need to switch to a safe one that doesn't contain vit a or mercury in the fish it's made from.
philadelphia and shop bought mayo is fine and so are mcchicken sandwiches lol! i forgot about pate, i ate it at a works xmas do but i didn't catch anything nasty. i think listeria can affect babies. getting very sick can affect the baby or the pregnancy but i was told in hospital that the baby is parasitic and takes all it needs from you no matter how ill you are lol! dehydration or starvation should be avoided, so if you do get a bug etc. see the doc if it lasts for more than a day or so. some people just vomit lots in pregnancy, if it happens to you ask for help, there are tablets you can take or you might need rehydrating on a drip in hospital. i went in overnight twice during my recent pregnancy, just to have a fluid drip and it made me feel a lot better.
well done on cutting down on your smoking, that's great, i've never smoked but have seen others give up and it looks tough lol! ask the midwife about a bounty book (mine came with a plastic pouch for keeping my pregnancy notes in), it will have a card in it somewhere to take to boots or mothercare for a mum-to-be pack with info and samples. she should also give you an emma's diary book, that also has a card for a pack from boots, mine contained choccies lol! i got a baby welcome pack too, from the doctors surgery, i liked the NCT magazine in that.52% tight0 -

Perhaps it's a regional thing but I knew of the benefits of folic acid years before becoming (or trying to) pregnant. There are often articles on it in the daily papers. A colleague of mine has Spina Bifta and lectures all women of child baring age on taking Folic Acid routinely just in case they have an acident. Think she's given up on me now LOL
I also knew about cat litter though I hate the blighters!
Smoking. Ok I'm an ex smoker so I can be meaner.:snow_laug Stop !!!!! footing around and give up now. This is the best incentive you will ever have for stopping. Go cold turkey for a few days and hopefully your hormones which increase your sense of smell will make it too stomach churning for you to go back to it no matter how much you crave.
Don't worry if you are being constantly sick. It's the sign of a healthy baby. I threw up at least once a day for full 9 months. Fab diet and great buying size 10 maternity clothes when your normal size is 16!!~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)
