if you put your period date in there it will tell you when baby is due, you might have to register first though. if they ask for your due date when you register just put july 31st and you can change it later when you know your due date.

good luck with getting to see your GP! what happens here is you see the GP who will want to send off a urine sample. that takes around a week, and you call the surgery. they will tell you it's positive, and to come in and collect an antenatal pack. the pack includes the green pregnancy notes, it's a medical record of your pregnancy that you keep with you until you give birth. some surgeries might give you a baby welcome pack, it's a bag of information and samples produced by unicef and the NCT (national childbirth trust). there's also a bounty pack and an emma's diary pack but sometimes it will be the midwife who provides those. they each contain a book about pregnancy, so worth reading. there will also be a contact number - you have to call the midwife centre and make an appointment for someone to do the 'booking in' appointment. it's usually at your house although first time around i remember they came to my workplace to do it lol! ours can only be contacted between 9 and 9.30am, the rest of the time it's an answer machine, so you may need to call them from work. here they aim to see you before you're 12 weeks pregnant but it almost never happens. here we have a scan at 12 weeks, the GP writes to the hospital to arrange that. some areas just do a scan at 16-20 weeks though.

the booking in appointment goes through the options for where to give birth, any possible problems such as genetic disorders in the family etc. and they'll ask the blood group of both parents.

keep us updated - it's so exciting lol! fingers (not legs lol!) crossed for those trying for a baby *HUGS*

you don't sound thick lol! nobody knows much about pregnancy until it happens to them. i get august 4th as your due date so definitely no flying to turkey in june i'm afraid, you can't usually fly during the 12 weeks before your due date. babies can be born up to 2 weeks early or 2 weeks late for no reason at all, so august 4th won't necessarily be the date baby arrives.

if you want to know, some hospitals will tell you at the 20 week scan if you're having a boy or girl (if they can see, sometimes baby is in an awkward position). i don't think they can tell before around 17 weeks of pregnancy because boys bits don't grow until that stage. some people want a 3d or 4d scan of their baby if the hospital doesn't scan at 20 weeks or won't tell you the sex of the baby.

there are lots of people who have had babies on here, so you'll always get advice. i also joined bounty.com, they have a message board for each month, so you could join the 'due in august' board. it's not as easy to use as this forum though lol! but you'll always find somebody asking whatever you wanted to ask. my area doesn't have antenatal classes, although you can pay for NCT ones but you have to book early. our NCT was fully booked because there were no nhs classes for a year or so, so i didn't get any classes.

you might want to read bounty, babycentre etc. websites in the early weeks because there are lists of foods you should avoid etc. and if you don't see the midwife for a few weeks you might not find out before you munch them all at christmas (pate, brie etc.).

CONGRATULATIONS! Wishing you a healthy pregnancy! The money that you would have spent on the holiday can now go on baby things. The other children will be delighted, a baby in 2006 and Christmas in Florida for 2007.

Ahh thanks guys, just having a read up now although my system is very slow, keeps kicking me out of everything

Luckily we've only booked the flights to Turkey as we have stayed in the same hotel before and booked it directly with them, they don't ask for payment until you get there.

I'll have to check to see if i can get any money back for the flights, but they are only chicken class so i think unless you actually have a letter of death you get nothing if you cancel them :( (I used to be a travel agent)

Well i took the test on saturday night and it was positive :j:j:j:j:j

There goes my holiday in June :( never mind.

I just this minute tried to call and make an appointment to see the doctor on friday afternoon (as i work and don't drive) and was told that they don't pre book appointments and i'll have to call at 8.15 am Friday morning to see if i can get in

I have to leave my house at 8.25 to catch my bus and they never answer the bloody phone !!

    Congratulations.

If it's that tricky getting an appointment ask to speak to either the surgery nurse, midwife or practice manager when you can ring. Explain not an urgent appointment but would like to set wheels in motion. I spoke to my GP by phone. He didn't do a further pregnancy test, he said if my home one was positive then it's ok. He said he would just pass my details to midwife. All HA do things differently. I had my booking in appointment with a hospital midwife at 11 weeks. Also saw my consultant at the same time. As I had fertility treatment I had a scan at 6 weeks. This apparently is the only time it's truely accurate to date a baby. They all grow uniformly to 6 weeks but after then it's a matter of averages. Found this out at my 18 week scan they tried to give me an earlier due date by 2 weeks due to size of baby, also tried again at 30 week scan as according to their charts if my original due date was right the baby would weigh 13-14lb. She arrived 2 weeks after my original due date and weighed 9lb. At birth they could confirm that she was 42 weeks gestation by the placenta.

Don't forget that prescriptions and dental treatment are now free for 12 months.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. With regard to due date - 'Naegele's rule applies - add 9 months and 7 days to the date of the first day of you last menstrual period (this assumes a 28 day cycle) - therefore EDD - 4th August 06.

This is great news. Thanks for telling us.

Some useful websites. I would read the BBC & Baby Centre site every day to see how far my baby had grown & to learn about what to buy & about tyhe birth. I mainly used the below websites and referred to a few books
