NatWest, and the whole RBS group are changing at some point. HSBC has just changed over their website now states they issue Visa Debit cards.

The Mastercard Debit card is coming to the UK supposedly at the beginning of the new year, it will be issued by Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks who will be the only ones left, I think, not to join the Visa Debit scheme.

About time banks moved from these Mickey-mouse Switch cards to a proper Visa Debit system, works everywhere without hassle, the banks will be pressurised to ditch Maestro, Solo and Electron as they have no place in the modern "electronic" world of money, they may get away with it in Europe with V-Pay, Maestro etc but the British will most certainly not tolerate toy-type financial tools.
Visa is proven and robust, merchants will agree that any major changes to Software and Hardware will have a huge cost bearing so Visa is favored, as the old saying goes and in this case has strong withstanding; "If it aint broke....don’t fix it!"
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Never had a single problem with my Maestro Card anywhere, of course if Visa get a monopoly position, that would be a bad thing in itself.

Yes. I was thinking this too. I also can't understand peoples passion over something so mundane as a debit card. Bit childish isn't it?

Where is the passion? What is the issue here?
A debit card is a powerful financial tool that makes day to day money management easier, Maestro is problematic as it not accepted everywhere like Visa is, it is a Mickey-mouse card hence the banks don’t want it because the customers don’t want it....majority vote, evidently.

No it is called an "opinion" and like everyone else I am entitled to that "opinion" ;)

It's good to hear that the RBS Group will be offering VISA debit cards to it's customers in the future.

I assume that the RBS Group basic accounts (i.e. Natwest Step account and RBS Key Account) will have VISA debit cards, just like the basic accounts at Barclays and LTSB?

Yeah you would think that but that would be good custome service, right? No, you will probably get a visa electron.

I personally would have no issue with Visa moving into a monopoly position. I wouldn't like it for a bank, but a monopoly on payment services doesn't bother me. I don't mind a monopoly on CHAPS...

If not a monopoly, then I would like to see a standardization put into place. Get rid of all this "issue number" nonsense and 18 digit card numbers.
    What would William Shatner do?
  • Let's hope the training on chargebacks and VISA on a debit card will be just as good with RBS Group
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009
