I trust Google more than some of the "data-mongers" and spin doctors that lerk on these forums, there is allot of misleading information out there I guess but I must say Google has been very helpful.
Just got to keep an open mind eh Inactive?
It is you that has a closed mind in your preference for Visa, I have used a Maestro and Visa Debit Card for years, as far as I am concerned, there is no difference whatsoever to me as a customer, however I do believe that having more than Visa as an option is beneficial to consumers in general.

The main difference as far as UK consumers are concerned between Mastercard Debit and Maestro is simply the Mastercard brand name used (as they own/use both)
'Mastercard Debit' cards started being issued in the UK during August I believe..

With the move by most banks to offer Visa Debit which banks will offer Mastercard debit?0 -

With the move by most banks to offer Visa Debit which banks will offer Mastercard debit?
Clydesdale Bank and their other brand Yorkshire Bank currently plan on issuing Mastercard Debit, sometime next year. It will also apply to their pre-paid card which will also be able to have "value" loaded on to the Chip directly as was the plan for Mondex and Visa Cash (it was on trial in Leed years ago if anyone remembers). They hold a large part of the pre-payment market.0 -
Might be a dumb question but if I was to apply for a RBS student current account, would the debit card be a maestro or a visa?
I know it doesn't matter at the end of the day, but, which would it be?
Also off what I've seen in the shop I work in at weekend part time, both work fine, both are as quick as one another. Not seen a place refuse a maestro card to date so in reality, I haven't seen anything which makes visa better than maestro or would make me dislike one or the other. I did hear that visa gives you more protection on purchases but not sure how true that is.0 -
This has been in the pipeline for a few months now, i noticed that in HSBC IB - there was a new option to activate a new card! When i emailed them about it, they told me that it was for a new debit card they were introducing, it didn't take much thought, since the uk card market is an oligopoly.
For the people who say that Maestro isnt widely accepted, i have never been into a store and had it refused, the card i have trouble with is my American Express - hardly anywhere takes this- in fact i got accused of trying to pay with a fake card in a well known opticians. Anyway im going off on a tangent, i feel that as long as i don't have to pay a transaction fee i dont really care if i use a Maestro/Mastercard Debit or Visa Debit (Delta!) and if Visa Debit takes a nano second faster to process, well that has greatly enhanced my life!!!!!!:beer:In My 'Permanant' Pre-Masters Gap Year

You answered you own question at the end of your sentence...no.
MasterCard debit is a MasterCard with the word "debit" underneath, just like that of Visa Debit.
rofl,
Which 2 stand out as similar? :P
Maestro doesn't and has never had "debit" underneath it, because it only exists as a debit card, where as visa has credit and debit cards under the same visa name, thus a need for differentiation.0 -
Lol, Wikipedia said that Natwest is not going to change from Maestro to VISA. Why is that?
Scroll down to 'Market Competition' section: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_Debit
Looks like only RBS is doing it. According to the link in the first post, it says the roll out will begin in the middle of 2009. What month will that be? June/July?
Do you guys think that the basic bank account (i.e. RBS Key Account) would be an Electron card, or a proper VISA card just like the ones that are offered with Barclays and LTSB basic bank accounts? Anyone know (from RBS)? Fingers crossed it would be a VISA one.0 -
