What's happened to warm bedding?

When I got married I recieved a flanellette duvet cover as a wedding gift. It was lovely and it lasted a good 10 years. I haven't been able to find anywhere that sells a kingsize flanellette duvet cover since. Anybody seen any?
La Redoute do them. For example:

I like their stuff and you can usually get a discount/free gift with an order. My kids have these duvet covers and sheets for winter. They called them cosysheets when they were little.0 -
I always have flanellette sheets as I always find beds cold (also have electric blanket to pre-warm bed). I managed to get some NapGuard ones and they were very good quality, thick and fluffy. I always tumble dry them to retain the fluffiness. So worth paying the extra for better quality, the thin ones are a waste of money IMO.
Bear in mind that eventually the nap (pile) will wear away, you will probably get flatter areas on the bottom sheet from constant pressure of bottom/hip/shoulders so they might not last as long as or you may want to replace sooner than you would with cotton sheets due to them losing their cosiness.
Another thing I found, with a fitted bottom sheet the depth was never deep enough and my mattress is a Dunlopillo so not as deep as the sprung mattresses. The corners were always strained at the stitching and eventually came unstitched so I now have flat bottom sheets so there's enough to tuck under and no problems with corners.0 -

I for one couldn't even begin to consider going back to woollen blankets. My memories of winter nights is that no matter what you do, you can't get a blanket to tuck in around your neck and shoulders as a soft duvet will do. I shudder at just the thought of cold draughts sneaking their way in past my back, and if hubby should turn over, stretching the blankets even tighter .. !
Blankets were a swine to launder. They have to be done on cool, you should not wring or spin them, they are massively heavy when wet, and take forever to dry if put over the washing line unless the day is blisteringly hot and the line will take the strain!
They were, in my view, quite unhygienic since few people could wash them as often as they ought to have been - just think of all those dust mites and oils from skin and hair, that rarely got washed away!
I'm casting my vote for machine washable duvets, and a good hot water bottle. It's years and years of hard, bitter winter nights experience that led to the expression "one good turn takes all the blankets". Brrr - no thanks.
Goodness, glad I wasn't around when blankets where on the go, they sound like a nightmare!Top Cash Back: £882

do you remember the dark grey army blankets? I never turned in bed then because the bedding was so heavy
The bedding from here is top top quality. I splashed out on some 1000 count egyptian cotton bedding 3 years ago. Really nice stuff and will last a lifetime

I had a cotton blanket from them which is on our bed now. It breathes and is lovely and warm or cool as needed

I remember those blankets well, they were so heavy (and rough)as a child it was'nt so much a case of getting tucked into bed it was like being pressed into the mattress you could'nt move an inch.I'm sure they made them from horse hair or something they were horrible.0 -
I love old style blankets and bedding, I stocked up on woolen blankets last winter for $1 a blanket or even $0.50 a blanket at garage sales.
So much cheaper than anything else you can get lol, and given two good machine washes and a good line dry, they were as good as new, none (and I got about 5 lol) had any wholes or anything and one is a really soft lovely blanket the others are fine above flanelette sheets not scratchy or anything.
Here the alternative is polarfleece blankets which to buy new are far cheaper than wool but they are just not as warm really
And I for one love the weight of lots of blankets, it is bliss isn't it? :rotfl:"Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without!!"Nov NSD: ?/30 Nov Make 10 Day ?/300Get Rid Of Debt: ?/2000 !! :mad:0 -
Hi,
I got all my flanellette sheets (& pillowcases) from Dunelm Mill! Very nice, not called flanellette....they are called Soft Sensations! They are really nice quality & come in a variety of colours. I just paid £15.99 for a single bed set.....fitted sheet, flat sheet & pillowcase!
Dunelm do mail order.......not sure if they deliver to the Islands though!

I like old woolly blankets too, I inherited a pile when my grandad died a couple ofyears ago, and they haven't been off my bed since! They're more versatile than duvets, one is fine for summer, and up to 6 in winter! And they don't take up so much space as storing several different duvets with different tog ratings!
As for warm sheets, if you replace your top and bottom sheet with a fleecy throw, your bed will always be warm and inviting! The one I had last year was just slightly too small, so I'm going to find if any fabric shops stock fleece on a roll that might be wide enough for this year!0 -
Strangely enough Home Bargains have them in, very soft and warm to the touch. I think they were about £5, certainly not much more. I was considering getting some for DD.“I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different.”
