Yes, I've had to press my microwave wheaty bags into service. For some reason, Mr LW doesn't care for cold feet on his back.

  • I did get some - 1 fitted sheet & 1 flat sheet (of the flowered variety!) - as a wedding present 4 years ago, but they're now misshapen & shrunk - and worn out without much wear, so I want to buy quality.

  • Is there an easy way of telling whether flannelette sheets are good quality e.g. price? I'm loloking at the John Lewis ones but I've never paid anywhere near that sort of money for sheets before :o
  • Neither have I, I guess theres no way of telling other than on price and recomendations.

  • Oh my, what memories this thread kicked off in my mind! Yes, flannelette sheets feel warmer when you first slide into bed, but they don't seem to wear as well as a good quality poly/cotton.

I for one couldn't even begin to consider going back to woollen blankets. My memories of winter nights is that no matter what you do, you can't get a blanket to tuck in around your neck and shoulders as a soft duvet will do. I shudder at just the thought of cold draughts sneaking their way in past my back, and if hubby should turn over, stretching the blankets even tighter .. !

Blankets were a swine to launder. They have to be done on cool, you should not wring or spin them, they are massively heavy when wet, and take forever to dry if put over the washing line unless the day is blisteringly hot and the line will take the strain!

They were, in my view, quite unhygienic since few people could wash them as often as they ought to have been - just think of all those dust mites and oils from skin and hair, that rarely got washed away!

I'm casting my vote for machine washable duvets, and a good hot water bottle. It's years and years of hard, bitter winter nights experience that led to the expression "one good turn takes all the blankets". Brrr - no thanks.
  • Hi i bought some last year , fitted and flat sheets made by beldorm , i got them from Boundary Mill ( so they were cheaper than the rrp) but i think you can get them elsewhere. Although they are only a year old they have had a lot of wear and tear already as they are on my little 2 1/2 year olds bed  and have needed frequent washing, so far they are holding up very well and i dont think they were that expensive, about £10 maximum for 2 fitted sheets.

They were 100 % cotton, and although i can see the point about poly cotton, i have to stick to 100% cotton as both my little boy and my husband have quite bad eczema and the poly/cotton ones make their skin itch more.

Oooh the memories, curling up with fleecy sheets and about a dozen blankets and things instead of a duvet! I was gutted when my grandparents finally changed our bedding to duvets. I feel a trip to a mill shop coming on, anything to avoid putting the heating on for as long as possible!
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

When I got married I recieved a flanellette duvet cover as a wedding gift. It was lovely and it lasted a good 10 years. I haven't been able to find anywhere that sells a kingsize flanellette duvet cover since. Anybody seen any?
