  • I don't have a bank account with Barclays but I do have a barclaycard credit card. Does anyone know if they operate as 2 separate companies? Should I even bother approaching barclays for a basic account once I'm bankrupt?

    thanks for any help.
  • When Nat west started getting arsey we went back to Barclays and got a fully functioning account with OD.

  • Shortly before declaring myself bankrupt 2 months ago, I spoke to my local Barclays - with whom I've always banked and never once was overdrawn - and they assured me that there'd be no problems with opening a Cash Account.
Now they tell me that "the computer" won't let them open one for me. They suggested that there might be something wrong with my history, but there isn't - apart from the bankruptcy of course! As their Cash Account is promoted as being suitable for undischarged bankrupts, this seems illogical. They've now suggested that I look elsewhere for a bank account. I've got my final wage cheque being posted to me (having also just been laid off) and Barclays say that they can't help me. I can't go to the Co-Op as one of my bankruptcy debts was with their credit card arm. Can I open a Post Office cash account to get my monies paid in?
  • I'd complain to barclays & see what happens....are you 100% certain your credit files contain nothing more than your Bankruptcy details??

the post office account wont be able to help you

    Post Office® card account
This is an account from the Post Office® that can only be used to receive benefits, state pensions and tax credit payments. It allows you to take cash out free of charge at any Post Office® branch using your card and PIN. Your card and PIN also allow you to request a balance enquiry.

Okay thanks for that information Phil, to date my child benefit and Tax credits all come via giro, I may consider getting them into a post office account after BR. Will have a look into it.

Have you actually applied to the co-op for a cashminder account? They are very BR friendly even when there is a BR debt.

Hmm not always so.....some recent members have had accounts refused because co-op were past creditors...co-op have said nothing about the changes yet

Phil can I just ask a quick question, are the Co-Op going to stop taking on BRs, or is is only BRs who had an account that has been taken into the BR.

I have never had a co-op account and on day of BR (when arranged court date) I hope to go and open one? so you help on this matter would be much appreciated. Barclays would not touch me with a barge pole so they are OUT>

    Thank you.

  • Co-op are still accepting BR's wth no problems. It does appear how ever recently they are stopping opening accounts for people that have owed them money in the past. This hasn't been officially been confirmed yet but some posters have had difficculties. At the moment if you owe Co-op then it is always worth a punt and apply for an account.

Rylynn you do not have to wait untill BR to open your sccount, sort it out before you go BR, get all the essential DD's sorted and wages and benefits paid in. Tell them when you open the account that you will be going BR, tell the OR on the day of your BR that the account is the one you opened for your BR, the OR should say he has no interest in the account. Tell Co-op when you are BR and carry on using the account as normal. Co-op are very cool and it is once in a blue moon they will freeze an account. The only one we have seen in recent times was when a jobsworth OR got arsey and stuck his beak in.

If it does get frozen then a quick call to the OR will ellicit a fax from the OR to say they have no interest and the account will be unfrozen.
