Has anyone successfully moved up from a Barclays Cash Card Account to a Regular (Free) Current Account?

A Family member uses Barclays following their BR and since discharge the online banking shows pre-qualified for the £15 pm current account - when they click it they are taken to a page that says the Cash Card product is not upgradeable (as we expected) and to apply for a new account.

Has anyone done this and is there a way to keep the same account number and sort code?

I have debts with Barclays and Smile (which is run by co-op). If I go bankrupt will I be unable to open even a basic bank account? Also I have a joint bank account with my other half to pay joint bills - will that be closed if I go bankrupt?

    I have succeeded!

I phoned the Co-op and asked them about applying for a cashminder account and they couldn't have been more helpful. I told them I was a discharged bankrupt and the Advisor told me that they just do an check on your address rather than a credit score. As I am with E-on online billing, and my Council Tax invoice is more than 6 months old, I can provide a copy of my driving licence but it has to be certified or I can go into the nearest Britannia branch which for me isn't too far so I am very relieved after the problems I encountered earlier this week.

    27 September 2011:
I can't open a Barclays Basic account; I tried but although I had a zero balance with them, I had declared it on my Statement of affairs for my banktruptcy so they wouldn't allow me an account.

I then tried the HSBC and duly took all my documents in and they got sent off, but I was turned down by a letter received today telling me that my credit rating was acceptable but an associate credit scoring was unnacceptable. I was under the impression that basic bank accounts weren't credit scored. I was prepared to open a basic account and then in 6/12 months, go through the scoring to open up a 'normal' account and build up my rating. When I told them this at the branch it all seemed okay.

The Natwest said that to get onto my partner's account I would need to provide a certificate of discharge and that wouldn't guarantee anything.

Santander said I could open a savings account with a cash machine (not debit) card and I maybe able to get my wages paid in, but it might not work. And when I went into branch the staff would be telling me that I wasn't using my account properly, but they were just doing their job!

Now I'm back to square one! I would appreciate any advice on which banks can help. How on earth does anyone get their salary paid to them if they are single and don't have an account?
  • Co-op Cashminder seems popular.
