I hate to be a pain, but please can everyone remember not to post banking queries in this sticky. The thread was started to make it easier for people to access banking info, but if people keep posting their queries in it, it will make it harder for other members to find the relevant info on what bank accounts are available. Posting in the sticky also makes it less likely that people will respond to your query, as they're not expecting to see queries here.

If members find a particular bank is amenable to BR's, then it's very useful to have the info, but otherwise please keep this sticky query-free by starting a new thread in the Bankruptcy forum itself when you have a banking query. Thanks. :)

Sorry I am just totally confused. Who is sticky.

I applied for the co-op account two days before the bankruptcy and was referred... 'that's it' I thought - 'I've go no chance..'

Well, bankruptcy came and went and it turns out I have been accepted by the co-op, I just need to send some ID to them :p

Very pleased to say the least. I finally feel like i've been given a break for once..!

So.. if you get referred don't panic, as I did..!

Co-op seems a pretty decent account..

  • A friend of mine opened an Abbey National basic account prior to bankruptcy and the OR is going to allow it. This is not to say that Abbey accept undischarged BR's but it seems that this may be allowable

backontheup just because the OR is fine with it makes no difference at all. It is the bank who will close the account when they find out that your friend is BR.

The only 2 BR friendly banks are Barclays and Co-op.

  • 2 years after discharge I am still using the nationwide flex a/c without any hitches. I get round the lack of a debit/credit card by using a pre-paid mastercard which is available to nearly everyone as has no credit checks are made when applying www.mycashplus.co.uk (I think you can also have your wages paid into it). There are some fees for the card which are clearly explained but for myself it is worth it. Having read the thread though I will be looking at the Co-op a/c as the Visa Electron would be a great help.

Hi just wanted to add that Clydesdale Bank (Scotland) gave hubby an account after his bank of Scotland one was closed due to Bankruptcy. He needed a letter from the trustee to say he was allowed to have an account though. Their basic account comes with a maestro card now too which makes things easier. I think they are Yorkshire bank in England.
My husband is due t be made bankrupt soon. I stumbled across this site and I'm now totally freaked out. Didn't know things were so complicated. We have a joint acc. with B.O.S. I also have an account with TSB. I'll need to study this information carefully and plan for the future. Good to know about Clydsdale, something to think about. Thanks for the info.
  • I went BR on 1st Feb, which was a Friday, my head at the time was a bit of a mess!

I didn't apply for a new bank account straight away, but when I phoned the co-op a few days later they were very helpful, I applied over the phone and was told I was successful dependent on a few formalities eg id.

I took the documents into my local branch on mon 11th and they received them at their HQ on fri 15th.

I am due to paid at midnight tonight and was therefore in a hurry for the account to be opened!

They were very helpful on the phone and out notes on my account saying it was urgent, I rang again on Mon am and they issued my with my account no and sort code, which i in turn passed on to my work

So fingers crossed I should get paid tonight without any hassle

In short I do think that the Co-op have been very good and have helped me 100% even knowing from the start I was BR
  • Why is it I have been refused a coop account?

Anybody got any contact details to appeal against their decision?
