Just this afternoon been to Barclays to try and open an account.

The lady said that their cash card account can not be opened in the branch and gave me a booklet and form to fill in. She did photocopy and authenticate my drivers license and passport so I don't have to post the originals.

Just thought I'd post this, as I wasn't aware that you couldn't open the account in the branch.

Having problems getting a bank account

    Became BR 21st May 07

Been to - (all basic accounts applied for)

Barclays, filled out form, refused Equifax
    Nationwide, refused due to BR
    Abbey, Refused
    Natwest, was creditor
    Yorkshire Bank, no BR allowed
HSBC (the most helpfull, no looking down noses at me lol), refused experian

Lady at HSBC was quite bewildered with this as she had other BR customers and spoke to the manager re the decision.

They wondered if the credit ppl hadn't updated there systems of if the level of debt could be the problem
She is going to try the appication again in a month (see if anything has changed)

What should Experian and Equifax have on there records after BR?
Starting to think I wont get a bank account untill i'm discharged

There is no Coop near me

    Any advice would be grate

You can apply for the Co-op one over the phone. It's quite a simple procedure. It's quite good because you can deposit money in it at the post office

Nothing. Remember though that the OR will inform all existing bank/building societies that you're BR. While some will allow you to keep the account open, some are hit by admin glitches (left hand not knowing what right hand is doing) and accounts get frozen. They then don't get opened again for a good few days, certainly not before the organisation has received a letter from the OR saying he has no objection to you using the account. If you're going BR on Tuesday, it would make more sense to me to leave opening the account until after your court hearing to save yourself possible aggravation in the future.
  • Please can everyone remember to post their queries about bank accounts as a new thread, & not in this sticky. Apart from the fact that this sticky is just meant for accounts we know are suitable for bankrupts rather than discussion about accounts, your query is likely to be looked at more quickly & by more people if you give it an appropriate title in a new thread. You can find the "New Thread" button at the top of the forum page, on the left-hand side - it's just under the "Main Site" button on the page here. Thanks. :)

    Good morning

I will be submitting my bankruptsy forms in about a weeks time.

Can I contact the Co-op bank now to get the ball rolling on opening an cashminder account, or must I wait until the Receiver says I can?

Any advice most welcome. Thanks :)
