have to agree with others that Papa Browns in Carrick and the Millside in Cloughmills are great places to eat. The food in Papa Browns is very tasty, the millside's mixed grill is massive.

The Smugglers Inn at the Causeway is another good place to eat, traditional food and large portions.

Anyone eat out in the Downpatrick/Saintfield/Killyleagh area?
  • millside in cloughtmills is OUTSTANDING value for money
lunch special £5.95 for meat (chargrill chicken and steak my fav) pea come on the plate and then two big dishes of veg and spuds roast and mash

I've just heard that the couple who own the millside and the Causeway, have now purchased the Fullerton Arms in Ballintoy, expect similar type grub in there soon;)
  • I think, for the size of the town, there is a bit of a shortage of nice eating places round Ballymena.....

I have to agree, and looking at the replies to Willowisp's question kind of illustrates the point - if you're not in the mood for a Chinese or hotel food then your options in Ballymena can be a bit limited. Having spent 8 years in Birmingham I particularly miss having a good local Indian restaurant

For Chinese we particularly like the New Manley (need to book at weekends and doesn't take cards, good seafood) and the Red Peaches, plus the buffet at the China Garden is pretty good value, particularly at lunch times.

I don't think anyone has mentioned upstairs at the Blackstone yet? We've had a few good meals there too.

The Primrose bar & restaurant in Ballynahinch serves really excellent food. I go every other Saturday and have never had a bad meal. The restaurant is only open on a Saturday night except in the run up to Christmas but the bar food is much better than many "good" restaurants I've been to.
The White Horse in Saintfield can be a bit hit and miss. The Villager in Crossgar do a 3 course meal for 2 and a bottle for £34.95 Mon - Thurs. The restaurant is really nice and you can see right into the kitchen and watch the chefs cook.

Heading out to belfast tonight to see cirque de soleil and quite fancy grabbing something quick to eat before hand - any reccomendations for somewhere close to the odyssey that perhaps does a pre theatre menu?

I would try Tedfords. They do a pre-theatre menu from 5 till 6.30 which is excellent value. The food is great and its a 5 minute walk to the Odyssey.

  • sorry this isn't to help for Belfast eateries!

My favourite restaurant is the Pot Belly Restaurant outside Banbridge on the way to Gilford. It does a early bird menu but I usually am too late. The food is as dear as you want it to be. It can be expensive but is definitely worth the money.

Other good restaurants in Gilford are Sax on the Street and Mill Street Brassiere. Not sure why Gilford seems to be a mecca for good food but it really is worth a trip.

Pier 36 in Donaghadee is lovely. One of the few places I've been to with a vegetarian menu!
  • Boyle's Bar in Dromore is good - but can get very busy at weekends, so better to book! But that's always a good sign......
