I think Aldi is shop where you can't get all your weeks shopping, but its good for certain things.

Deli meat, such as salami is about a third of what you pay in any supermarket and they do nice continental cheeses as well.

I'm on a mission the next couple of months to try and value shop more as my Tesco shop came to £160 yesterday  for the week!

You are kidding me about the deli meat, have you actually eaten it? The mere look of the sorry deli meat makes me shudder and feel like heaving never mind eat it. I couldn't care less how cheap it is, it's not fit for dog consumption never mind human consumption.

I'm in Germany, and Aldi and Lidl are just supermarkets here, not astonishing cheap discount bonanza shops.

The quality is pretty much what you'd get in any other supermarket (the V-Markt closer to me is much bigger, but often poorer quality and more expensive), and the reason they seem so cheap in the UK is because everything's more expensive there anyway. The products are different to the UK products because tastes in the target market - ie continental Europe - are different. If you don't like the stuff then shop elsewhere - maybe I'm acclimatised but it really isn't that bad. I'm eating potatoes and fish from Aldi now, and they're pretty good (although I did cook them myself, which might be why).

Everything is cheaper in Europe compared to the UK?

When was the last time you shooped in the UK

I was based in the USA for the past 7 years and in Hong Kong for 6 years before that and between 1995 and 2007 complained continually about the cost of living in the UK...

Now that I'm living in Europe I actually look forward to going back to the UK because it is so cheap by comparison

A trip through Tescos brings a smile to my face - even the expats here that live in Germany complain that the grocery shopping is not to UK standards - I'd agree but I can't say the UK can compete as far as bread and many dairy products are concerned ;)

My MIL is a massive Aldi fan, especially the seafood pizza, OH had some round there once and it smelled on his breath for a week, made me sick!

as the title says went to aldi at the weekend i found it to be expensive [i buy a lot of asdas value range !] and disorganised.i bet if you went to any supermarket and tried their value lines you would save money and still get quality items !

Are you sure you didn't go to Aldi in Holland? It sucks over here compared to the UK and Germany from my own experience - Aldi in the USA is also a shambles - went once and never returned.

  • i shop at all three netto, aldi and lidil. the best of them i think for bargains is netto for example 1.5Lt bottle of coke a cola 59p or 5 cans of pepsi £1.
at the moment 10 large eggs 90p been on at this price for the last 8 months. tesco have 6 value small eggs 88p. more like pigeon eggs to me.
their value diet cola is 23p at netto and tastes like diet coke not like tescos 20p version witch taste like weak flavored water. tried tescos last week it still 3/4 full and will go down the sink as it was that bad.
:rotfl: given up on tesco do a lot os boots offers. but weekends are now in orange trackside b. lol
now a race marshal at silverstone.

My problem with Aldi and Lidl is I can never do a full shop there, I have tried a lot of their brands and do prefer others (i.e there spaghetti sauce vs Dolmio for one) so I usually end up going elsewhere anyway. If there is anything I fancy though I will try it :D

What I do buy from Lidl is the Irn Bru because there is no difference in taste to regular Irn Bru and its half the price.
  • i have just visited aldi and the fruit and veg was cheap...the cheese and cooked meat is nice as well

I think their 69p deals on fruit and veg are great, especially the red grapes . I bought 3 punnets and they were still good 10 days later. As with all fruit and veg you have to check it carefully before buying.

I especially like their light version of crisps, and 'spready' cheese. And the Marmite was around 20p cheaper than Sainsbury/Tesco.
