Aldi & Lidl have never floated my boat.

I'm actually surprised they are referred to above as premium products for standard cost, I always thought they were full of cheap stuff.

I do get what Zoe is saying about meat products, I'm the same. I like chicken breasts, steaks, lamb chops, nice joints, VLF mince, premium sausages etc. I like meat that hasn't been messed about with.
Yes so why buy a pie? Both Aldi and Lidl sell a large selection of fresh meat all of which you describe as well as pre-prepared products. Being European stores and considerably smaller than our supermarkets, their layouts are designed to maximise the space they have. They sell one type of ketchup, not 10. If you're a brand name fan then you should stick to Tesco. When we had a recent scare re Sudan Red it became patently clear that much of our "Premier brand" food is manufactured in the same factories and strangely enough Aldi and Lidl's products were not affected.

I'm on a mission the next couple of months to try and value shop more as my Tesco shop came to £160 yesterday  for the week!

Just out of interest how many people are you feeding for that? If you want to save money on your groceries, have you tried the grocery challenge on the Old Style board? It is great, i have drastically reduced my monthly budget and am trying for £170 for the month.

I've never been to Aldi as there isnt one near me:o

  • The other good thing about Aldi id there arent all the different brands of the same item, so the shopping is quicker to do also not loads of things to get sidelined by!
I agree with the beans/tin toms they are better than Heinz.

    That doesn't match my experience.

Stompa (who does virtually all his shopping at Aldi).

    You'll notice I said "thought"

Thats because thats all it was, a thought (probably because of things I'd heard). I don't shop there as a rule.
I may gone in one, once every two years.

Fair enough, I'd wrongly assumed that you 'thought' that based on personal experience.

I love my local Lidl and go there for a shop at least once a week. I can't get everything there of course so have to resort to Tesco, yawn. I do have a local Aldi as well but don't go there very often because I'm quite happy with Lidl. But at least it's spotlessly clean, which is more than can be said of the local Asda which stinks, quite frankly.

    Another vote for Aldi! :T

I get my fruit and veg from a local farm shop and most meats from butchers, I make my own bread, cakes and biscuits and have my own eggs from our chickens, for treats I go to M&S.

I am not on a small budget and cook a lot of items from scratch, so even discerning customers shop at Aldi!

At Aldi I would usually buy - Strawberry Jam, Pain au chocolat, naan bread, tortilla wraps, Kitchen/Toilet Rolls, Cling Film, Foil, Bin Bags, Washing/Dish Washer tablets, tinned sweetcorn (for chickens!), bacon, flour, sugar, extra virgin olive oil, toothpaste, face cream, butter. marg, cheese, yoghurts, J+ (cheaper and mucher nicer alternative to J20's), Carton Orange, Squash & Milk.

I find Aldi to have good prices and good quality items otherwise, I wouldn't bother shopping there......oh and I can get round the shop reaaaally quick!

Deli meat, such as salami is about a third of what you pay in any supermarket

I really think that's a bit of an exaggeration.

ALDI used to be a lot better, but recently the prices have gone up often dearer than normal supermarkets for some stuff, and the bread has gone awful:(
Their 69p fruit n veg deals are good though esp the red grapes:p
