... i can only advise on ppts

    Hi Jammybunn,

I have a friend whos got her two kids (12 and 14) on her passport. The kids are off on hols without her so she knows they will need new passports - however, does she have to have hers amended (and pay) to knock them off or is she OK leaving them on hers?

I am renewing my and my wife's passports. Also we are getting ones for our two kids (7 and 4). Am I correct in thinking that we need countersignatory's for the kids passports?

Crazy that you can't just vouch for your own kids if you do.

    Thanks for any thoughts.

not in they havent changed significantly which may be the case for the 7 year old but the 4 yr old was presumably a new born when it was issued? they would need a c/s then

To many questions here, but here's one more:

My passport expires in 7 months time, so I need to renew asap (I travel internationally and need minimum 6months validity left on my passport for some countries visa requirements).

If I apply for a new passport at the Post Office this week, using my existing valid passport + Application form, will I then be able to use the existing soon-to-expire passport for the 2 trips to Europe I have booked in early December?

    TIA

once you renew it, you cant use the old passport as it is cancelled, best to get new passport done beofre the price goes up coz the 7 months will be carried over for you- gets too fussy with the 6 month validity coz not every country uses it- just mentioned across the board as a general rule

I need to renew my wife's and my own passport - which woul dbe quicker? Getting the forms from the PO or using the online version on the web site?

    thanks

pick the forms up from the post office but- heres the saver, dont pay check and send, if its just a renewal you need to do sections 1,2,3 and 9 only, if its damaged you need a countersig, current turnaround time is within 2 weeks, online they do the form and send it to you which you still have to post

I'm tempted to get my passport now, but will the new biometric passports provide me with better protection against identity fraud - e.g. someone finds my (lost) passport and does all manner of unspeakable things in my name!

If it will provode me with better protection I think I'll wait and get the Biometric one even if it will cost £9 more.

Also, my passport expired a few years ago. If I apply for one now is this counted as a "first application" and would I have to have the palaver of the "face to face interview"?

as long as you are in possession of the old passport (and its not a 12 month post office one) then its still a renewal even if theres a few years between expiry and submitting it

they will have to be deleted from her passport for them to have their own passport but it doesnt cost extra to delete them, all she has to do is put her ppt in the application with the 2 kids application forms, also they should (in accordance with policy) be sent back more securely by courier as its a "live" passport so if she was thinking about secure delivery at £3 then she can save there

ps policy is to return it by secure but it depends on the examiner as not everyone is as good at there job as yours truely
pps any other ppt they may be on also needs submitting like dads or nans

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand - if we get our passports renewed now, will they need to be updated next year to accomodate the biometric enhancements? If so, wouldn't it be cheaper if, like me, your passport has just run out but you won't be going abroad until next summer, and in February you get a new passport that is more expensive, but at least not redundant in a few months?
  • if you get a passport now, you will not need to have it done again next year, that would be too unrealistic (although the overtime would be fantastic) but if you arent travelling till next year then its up to yourself wether you pay £51 next year and get a biometric or pay £42 now

    Thanks for this jammybun.

Reckon its going to be too tight to get a passport before 2 day trip on Dec 2nd though.... after which time it'll be too late (and I need the passport again 10 days later).

Will see if my £51 will get me a Biometric passport in February...
  • i dont know whether you would know this jammyburn..

but whats the procedure on name changes? ive changed my name (not through deedpoll but just by a formal document signed by me n some witnesses renouncing my former name).... would this be acceptable? if so then do i need 2 renew? (my ppt has 2yrs left)... is there a charge 2 amend the ppt?

    thanks,
