I have just done this - changed my surname by Statutory Declaration and got a new passport. If you choose to, you could probably get away with using your current passport, however this could give you bother if, for instance, your credit cards etc are in your new name and you're booking a flight. So it's probably best to just pony up the cash and apply for a new passport even if yours hasn't run out (also having a new passport to show your new name may make other things easier as I've found people get confused by the Stat.Dec). It will cost the same as if you were renewing an expired passport, ie £42 (before the 3rd Dec) and you will have to send them the document confirming name change. There is a place on the renewal form for it and it's quite clear.
In case anyone is wondering why I didn't just use Deed Poll, these don't actually apply in Scotland, as it took me ages to find out.0 -
that is correct, if you keep the passport you have, you can travel on it as long as you book the tickets in that name, obviously as pandrea says it may cause problems with conflicting details on credit cards etc (if you have changed those) and you would need to just supply your stat dec with the form photos and ppt if you do decide to change0

I applied online early this morning for a passport renewal form (local PO doesn't carry them) with no response yet - how do they send them? There was no space to put in an email address. Why don't they have a form online that you can print off immediately? Or perhaps they do and I didn't spot it?0

I'm moving out on 1st of January, but not sure where too yet - If i send off to renew now will it be posted to me before then? or could i get it sent to my parents house? (i'll be there over christmas anyway..)
Obviously don't want my passport winding up on the doormat of whoever rents this house after me, but would rather not pay extra either..0 -
I've been confused about applying for a passport for awhile now - I hope someone can help me!
My parents got me a child ppt back in 1995 and it ran out in 2000. Now I'm 22 and was wondering how to go about applying for an adult one. Do I apply for a new Adult ppt or the renewal?
As for this price increase, do you recommend I go for the cheaper one or would there be possible problems with it? Avoiding passport problems is easily worth another £9. I plan to travel to Japan, Asia and the like.
Thanks for the help and jammybunn - wonderful job.0 -
tenuissent- they type the form up in block letters with the details you give them, then they post it to you, when you get it you need to send it to the ppt office (you should receive an addressed envelope)
mimp- at the mo they are being turned around v quickly so you should have it back by first week in december
luffy- if you still have the 95 issue, you need to complete an application form sections 1,2,3 and 9, and send as adult renewal with the old ppt, 2 photos and your fee. a current ppt is still a secure document and you wont have any problems travelling with it, the biometric ppt is to further secure identity and also to participate in the visa waiver scheme with the US- anyone with a machine readable passport (which is what the current ones are) will not have any problems travelling because there arent any countries using biometric ppts (that I know of) at the moment0 -
my 8 year old son is on my partners passport ... this is due to expire in the middle of next year ... She thought she'd beat the price increase by applying now.
So ... I did the online form filling in for her and him and 2 pre-printed passports forms have been delivered.
Hers says she need to include her old passport in the envelope as it's a renewal.
My sons form says he needs to include in the envelope any passport he has been attached to.
In both cases it's the same passport.
Can I put both applications inthe same envelope or will that just cause confusion meaning I miss the Dec 1st deadline and have to pay full whack.
I assume that both new passports will have a start date of July next year as this is when the current one expires ... or will they both have a duration of n year and 8 months ( where n is 10 for my partners and 5 for my sons )0 -
always post more than 1 family application in same envelope, this way they will be dealt with together and this usually results in a quicker return because you dont have different letters from different examiners (if any leters are to be sent). 2 forms, 2 lots of photos, 1 passport, childs full birth certificate (the one showing parents details) and 1 combined fee of £67. your partners passport will be till july 2016 and your sons will be a flat 5 year ppt as its technically his first- dont forget to have your sons countersigned and only one of the photos certified0

If I apply for a standard passport renewal now at £42, and then in (say) August next year decide that I would like to have the added security of a biometric passport will I then have to pay another £51 to get one?0

in a word, yes. The thing is, current passports are secure, when all the checks are performed and your passport is issued, the actual passport itself is very hard to manipulate and the record of your application is on the main index which shows all your details including photo and signature. If your passport was stolen and manipulated, it would only be of use for id with regards to id purpose, not including travel as when you declare it lost/stolen it is cancelled. The new passports are technically no different in that respect as the photo would still be hard to manipulate, only a bit harder, the difference is that when the internal antenna was scanned, say at an airport, the chip would show differnt data to that on the photo page,0
