My dog is 14 months old(mad springer spaniel!)& is due his annual booster jab, just phoned vets to book it and they told be it would cost £29.82!
I was expecting about £20, does this price vary from vet to vet or is it a standard price?

Wow, wish I had your vet, mine cost £38, and that was with the nurse not the vet.
Oops didn't realise this thread was so old.

I see most of these posts were in 2008, so have prices jumped since last year?

I got charged £39 for a booster, £32 for kennel cough, and £8 for a worming tablet (though he is a big dog - it was the XL size of Drontal)

    how does that shape up?

This years booster (YourPets) was £20, a huge saving on the £52 I paid last year:beer: and IIRC XL Drontal is about £5 & pence on somewhere like Petmeds so that wasn't too bad a mark up by your vets......
  • Thanks iceman and snowman2!

    Some sanity here!

For the people who won't vaccinate, thna god others do as that is the only thing which gives you this luxury!

I have nursed dogs dying of parvo and lepto and have even seen distemper. These are all on the increase due to a rising dog population and the stupidity of people not vaccinating fully - usually thinking puppy vacc is enough. Only when the animal is dying do people then say "maybe we should have vaccinated".

On price and service - they should all get an MOT prior to the jab! I have seen places in London (not charities either) doing vacc for £17-20!

Shop around, but bear in mind they are loss leaders. To get a full service from your vets you need to know where their emergency service is and who runs it.
In London it is hit and miss and if you are only registered at the local cheap vacc place do you know where to take your dog with a cut pad (or worse) after his Sunday morning walk??
There is 1 chain in London I would never go to no matter how cheap the vacc as the OOH service is not good enough. Under RCVS guidelines an emergency service only needs to give you basic first aid if you are not registered with them!
Give yourself a Chistmas bonus £14 a week!
    Total so far £28

My dogs were vaccinated this week and it was around £23.50 for the booster and £14.50 for the kennel cough for each dog.

Hi all, just to let you know I had my dogs booster done the other day and it was £19.99. Not sure how relevant this will be cos the thread is a while old now but thought I would put my twopenneth worth in.

You're lucky!!! My vet charges £54 for a booster and £60+ for the first jab!!!!

I keep reading more and more about how unecessary these annual jabs are and how they 'could' do more harm than good! Obviously vets on here aren't going to say that as they want you to keep on paying up every year!

It makes no financial difference to me whether you have a vaccine or not - I would be just as financially happy if you brought your dog in for an annual health check which is a good idea whatever your views on vaccination. I don't make any extra money on a vaccine, I just feel that protection against parvo or FeLV etc is important. I have seen puppies and adult dogs die from parvo, seen loads of cat flu and the devastating effects of FeLV.

There has only been one large scale survey looking for an association between illness in dogs and vaccination, a summery of which you can read here http://www.vetclick.com/news/view_article.php?ArticleId=118 It is of particular interest as it was not funded by any interest group (ie vaccine maufacturer) and does not show any association between vaccination in dogs and becoming unwell. That does not mean that there may not be specific animals in which vaccination may be felt to carry more risk than benefit (eg vaccination of animals with autoimmune diseases).

Most vets recommend annual vaccination and base the frequency on the data sheet recomendations for the vaccine brand that they use. Some parts of the vaccine may have a license for 3 years (disptemper, hepatitis, parvo) whilst other parts have only a 12 month license (leptospirosis, parainfluenza). The net result is that dogs may be vaccinated annually, receiving the components with a shorter duration of immunity every 12 months and those with a longer duration every 3 years. Some individuals may have immunity to some parts for longer than 3 years and if you wish you could assess this with blood samples to measure antibody levels. However blood samples will be at least as expensive as adminstering a vaccination so for the average dog owner it is cheaper and safer to follow the vaccination regime that the data sheet dictates.

If it is 15months since a leptospirosis vaccination then the immunity may be boosted to sufficient levels with a single injection. That does not guarantee that the dog is protected in between the 12month duration of immunity on the data sheet and the 15th month, it only shows that the immune system will have sufficient memory of the vaccination that it will not require 2 injections to get it back to protective levels.

Comparisons between humans, cats and dogs are fruitless. Humans may only have a tetanus vaccination boosted every 15 years, that does not mean that a cat vaccinated against FeLV should also have a 15 year immunity. They are different species so their bodies work in different ways. You may take a paracetemol if you have a bit of a headache to feel better. That isn't appropriate in a cat - paracetemol is fatally toxic in even small quantities to a cat.

Our charges are based on the price of a normal consultation plus the cost price of the vaccine. It believe that this is a fair price to charge as all animals are given a full physical examination starting from the nose and ending at the bottom. The examination is almost as important as the vaccination as it is an opportunity to pick up on many diseases before they become serious. If you are paying good money and not getting a proper examination then you are being ripped off.

I get worming tablets for a meduim size Staff cross for £1.75 from my local RSPCA center. Its Drontal and I think its usually two tablets (although its only one and half give her).
