I remember one of the first times I took my dog to the vet because she had kennel cough...ended up spending £18 on a worming tablet "just incase". At least !!!!!! Turpin wore a mask!

Since the monopolies board (?) stepped in to stop the drugs companies and vets working together to hold prices high, you can now buy the same wormers and flea treatment from other (less expensive companies). Any prescription drugs from the vets can also be obtained from a less expensive source. The vets are required to tell you this before they sell you drugs for your pet, but many forget to do this.

I think we already have some threads on this. I use this company

There are many companies offering this service now.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.
Read the sticky on the House Buying, Renting & Selling board.

So the flea and worm tablets I see in Asda would do the same job? If you think £18 is bad for an un-needed worming tablet, when she broke her leg running into a car the bill came to over £850. It was £70 to get her leg bandaged up and it was supposed to last a fortnight but came off within 72 hours. Despite following the vets instructions to the letter, they still charged us £70 every time it came off which I think was 4 times in all! Glad she was insured!

    Consider yourselves lucky......at my vets it's £52!!!!!!

That's what happens when you live in the Southeast (Essex) I suppose.....

Stone me! Thats excessive even I only charge £32 but we now do free wormers (decent ones not rubbish piperazine). I thought Surrey was the worst place for prices but that takes the biscuit. I get an average price survey - If I have time I'll look it out and post the details here as it gives guidelines for a particular area - thats roughly how we set ours.

That's about average for around here at a "regular" vets, I believe one of the vets4pets type places has opened up locally and are undercutting prices.....so I might go there for jabs next year;) My other option is the horses's vet, he offered to jab the dogs next time as long as the terriers were muzzled......said he wasn't worried about the big dog but was sick of getting bitten by little dogs. Not sure if he was joking ( you never know with him!!!) On an average day there are up to 14 dogs wandering around the yard so that might be an idea:cool: ....must remind him the next time I see him.

I've only started having the dogs vaccinated again after many years of only having puppy jabs and 1st booster due to the rise in parvo in the area....
The cat isn't vaccinated as she had a very bad reaction to her first jabs as did her mother.......really nasty abcesses and very under the weather for a long time so both the vet and I decided that they would have to take their chances as the reaction could worsen with every booster:eek:

"Yes we get ticks in the UK. I am forever extracting them from my 2"

I swear by Frontline Combo Spray, my dogs haven't had a single tick since I started using this years ago despite regularly going hunting in the undergrowth, works much better than frontline spot on for flea control also IMO. I hate removing ticks:eek: I'm always worried that I'll leave the head behind and they make my skin crawl!!!!!

<<<Finally - Next time that I get a dog with parvo in, I will have to have an open day for any people with unvaccinated dogs.>>

Thereby ensuring yourself even more income.

Hadn't thought of that ! Was expecting more like shock and awe but every cloud has a silver lining. BTW people can get ticks, I caught one off a patient about 6 years ago. Couldn't feel it but needed another vet to remove it as I couldn't reach it properly. Didn't Frontline myself though.

We also don't need to tell a client before we dispense a drug. Some drugs are exempt anyway from the regulations but the requirement is to display a prominant notice outlining the fact that prescriptions are available and listing the price of the top ten prescription drugs. Ours is next to the reception desk.
  • I just got my dogs annual booster last night and was charged £33.70. No check up no MOT. A quick stick in the back of the neck and see u next year.... Is there not a comparison sight for general vet care products and services?:T
  • Buy vet products from petsensedirect.com much cheaper than paying a vet for basic vet treatments. Read the instructions carefully and apply as directed. You will need the dogs or cats correct weight to order right size.
You can order online and dilivery is free and very fast...enjoy...;)

First I read its £52 and then I read that you dont get a check for £33.70 - thats a very poor service. At the very least you deserve a check for that cost. A cynical point of view would suggest that a check might even reveal something which requires further attention and could generate more income for the practice. I hate this shoddy stuff it drags us all down. I would at least be talking to other pet owners and finding out what service they get. I actually believe that people will pay anyhting if and ONLY IF they get a service which they feel offers value for money. You clearly have not had value for money and you have chosen to make your view clear - my point is made...

Oh yes, sometimes I wonder if SOME vets really think that pet owners wouldn't compare and move to another;) TBH as far as I'm concerned the quality of care is more important than saving a few quid but wen it's routine stuff I will go wherever is best value. The thing I really really hate is the feeling of being "fleeced", when I see a new vet who then tries to sell me this or that but when challenged (nicely:D ) to explain why I should buy from the practice when it's widely available elsewhere will try to apply guilt that I dn't care enough about my animals.....that actually happened once:mad: The impression I got was that vets were told to upsell products to generate extra income, that's fine but don't act like a poor preforming double glazing salesman when someone asks questions.......

I have no problem with a vet surgery being run as a business, I don't seek or expect discounts but in return I will price match for want of a better word when it doesn't affect quality of care

    NO!!!

They are usually the Bob Martin type and they are useless.......

You can buy Drontal online without a prescription, I think I paid £1.25 per tablet ( but that was clubbing together with other dog owners to buy in bulk 100 + tablets) which does 10 kgs of dog IYSWIM
