How much for dogs annual booster jab?

I'm in Central Scotland and I was 24.00 on my dogs last booster in March this year, this includes a check over, sounds heart, checks breathing, eyes, teeth, ears etc.
I don't mind paying it, its once a year and it gives peace of mind!
Oh and she emptied the anal gland the last time we were there.......ewwwwww! All included in the price too!

My vet charges over £70 for each of our dogs, but that includes the rabies injection needed for the DEFRA Pets Travel Scheme. The vet told us this year that the rabies injection lasts 3 years but I'm a bit wary about this as DEFRA insists on annual injections.

Lets correct some mistakes.
Firstly, no dog vaccine in the UK costs £3 for the full set, most cost £10 - £11. Secondly, vaccination intervals vary between brands and are regulated by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate, part of DEFRA. The recommended intervals on based on the results of scientific tests that ensure good group immunity. Some animals will have better immunity and the vaccine will last longer but we need to protect the lower end of the immunity scale. For most of the leading brands, distemper, hepatitis and parvo has a 3 year duration of immunity, lepto and parainfluenza have 12 months so vaccines will vary year by year.
Thirdly, a fair price for a vaccination is the standard consultation plus £10 - 15 for the cost of the vaccine. If you are paying less than this, your vet is vaccinating as a loss leader and not making loads of money from it. If you are paying substantially more, you are either being ripped off or getting a load more service for your money.
Fourthly, at £22 for a dog vaccine, I would be losing money by the time I have paid for the vaccine, staff, buildings, electricity, rates etc. Hardly !!!!!! Turpin. If you want a nice surgery, you have to pay for it.
Fifthly (wish I hadn't started this now) - What do you think a homeopathic vaccine is? It is a small amount of what causes the disease. A vaccine is a purified form of what causes the disease, just tested and made safe to use.
Six - Some dogs may be protected by a single vaccine at puppyhood but the immune system is not fully developed then anyway. Boosters are an accepted part of human vaccinations. The only disease I can think of that affects humans and dogs is rabies and both species have boosters every 3 years. Dogs don't get tetanus, polio, mumps so you can't directly compare.
Seven - Annual boosters aren't just about the quick jab, we pick up many other problems at the same time. Heart disease, arthritis, kidney and thyroid problems. Humans get regular health checks so should your pet.
Finally - Next time that I get a dog with parvo in, I will have to have an open day for any people with unvaccinated dogs. Parvo is a horrible disease, the smell is terrible, the guts all die and the puppy is in pain. £30 is a small price to prevent this.

The best thing to do is ask you vet to explain what the vaccine or any treatment is for and to justify it. It doesn't have to be comfrontational but I can do that every time

Thank you Snowman 2-you took the words right out of my mouth. No vaccine costs £3 wholesale. Most practices price vaccines fairly and we use the annual booster check to give your pet a good MOT and discuss concerns. Vaccine intervals are currently under review but vets currently follow recommended practice.
And yes parvo is heatbreaking - I distinctly remember the last parvo puppy I treated and the negative outcome. It does happen.

Hi all, just to let you know I had my dogs booster done the other day and it was £19.99. Not sure how relevant this will be cos the thread is a while old now but thought I would put my twopenneth worth in.

If the drug of choice used by your vet has been cleared by DEFRA for 3 yearly booster - then your insurance covers you. The wording on policies say something along the lines that you have to comply with a recommended vaccination programme.

For those of you who really are concerned about vaccinating then you can always arrange a titre test to see if your dog is still immune - although this will cost extra

Yes we get ticks in the UK. I am forever extracting them from my 2 :eek:

Luckily, the main problem in the UK is Lymes disease, which is usually transmitted from Deer ticks and most ticks UK dogs tend to get a sheep ones.

The !!!!!! Turpin reference was about having to pay £18 for a worming tablet when she clearly had kennel cough. I'd get my dogs booster jabs done every year anyway because I love her to bits and I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to her even if she does wake me up at 3am every morning for the toilet!
