isnt it amazing when we have a thread like this who the so called pros turned up and tell us all about health & safety, insurance, cost of transport etc...

its so funny cause in my 50 odd yrs ive never had a window cleaner fall off a ladder and hit a passerby or break anything on my/parents property.

    its CLEANING WINDOWS !!!!!!.
    it aint rocket science.

It’s so funny, in my life I have know people who have never been in a traffic accident!

You sound like you will like to save money at any cost, which most people are aware you get what you pay for.

    Some never learn.

if i see my W/C next time hes here, i will ask to see his insurance cert.
im very sure he will just laugh his head off.

I’m sure he will be laughing his head off, if he hasn’t got any insurance.

If in the unfortunate event he has any kind of injury while cleaning your property, then he is advised to sue you, I’m sure he will be laughing his head off again once he gets a large cheque from you.

How about you, do you think you will be laughing your head off as well.

    It aint “Rocket Science”
  • Thanks for all the responses - who knew it would spark such debate!
In the end the guy (who had already cancelled on us once) didn't even turn up so I am still none the wiser!

If anyone knows any window cleaners in Edinburgh please let me know!
On the liability side of things - we have 2 windows which look out onto the street so goodness knows what would happen should a W/C fall - I think I would prefer one with insurance!

That's right. It isn't rocket science. It's not about the 50 years when it hasn't happened. It's about the one occasion when it MIGHT happen. That's what insurance is about. However, I would agree with you that the "no win no fee" society has gone too far.
The costs listed by Jaykie are all legitimate business expenses and are taken off the turnover BEFORE income is calculated. I think you would be surprised just how much money is deducted from turnover before you get to the part about income - especially if someone is using a pure water pole set-up. Also, I am referring to law abiding, tax paying business - not to the guy who does a bit part-time and puts it all in his pocket without declaring. It's unfortunate that window cleaning has such a reputation but things have been changing gradually in recent years.

  • I pay £15 for about 15 windows, plus front, back and garage doors.

My neighbour in a huge 3 storey house pays £35 (same window cleaner).

If you are getting it done for anything under £1 a window for a single or two storey dwelling, you are doing well (IMO).
I'm in the southeast though and there does seem to be a fair bit of regional variation.
  • Have to agree with you shiner thats about the same prices as me and many many others,

I'm in the southest as well.

Our window cleaner has been doing our windows since we moved in nearly 7 years ago. It was a new estate and he was canny enough to approach everyone about 2 weeks after they moved in asking if they wanted a window cleaner. As there was still building going on our windows were constantly getting dirty and dusty and he has a very high take up rate. He cleans the majority of the houses on our estate and charges between £15 and £40 per house depending on the size. He does a very good job as well. :T
