Spent another hour or so working out my best options and gave up on Sky, they wouldn't do anything for me apart from charge the standard prices listed on their website, plus they wont do the phone line it will have to be a 12 month line rental with BT.

Spoke to Virginmedia and managed to get broadband XL, phone unlimited calls plus line rental, V+HD XL with Sky sports, ESPN and Movie channels and an additional multiroom box for £77/month, so I am happy with that.

Can anyone else confirm that Sky definitely do not do a credit check please? Also, do they ask for previous address when you sign up?

we are with BT at the moment for Phone and BB and pay £45 a month and with sky £10 for the HD and for the 5 variety + movies 1+2 and are paying £48 for that a month so all in all £93 a month:cool:.
Phone 12 month contract with BT ends 20th june and BB on the 2nd of july 2010.
Do you think i would get a better deal with virgin? As i have seen people paying £50 odd for multiroom, phone and BB all in?

I have been paying £56.50 for Sky TV, 4 pack with Premium Pack (basically all channels available apart from kids), landline with free evening and weekend calls and 20mb unlimited internet. I called Sky on the 18th of June 2010 after reading the cutting cable TV costs article and explained to them that I am struggling to afford the bills so could they give me a special offer. They told me there is a special offer available for the broadband, so without having to change anything they reduced the broadband fee from £10 to £7.50 for the rest of the broadband subscriptions term (the contract is for 12 month). They also reduced the cost of my TV package without having to lose any channels. All in all I am now paying £49.50 for exactly the same products as before and not entered any new contracts and also not had to extend the term of any contracts (Sky TV is on a month by month subscription after the initial 1 year contract). It is worth noting that the discount availble depends on the length of time you've been with Sky, I was advised by the Sky man I spoke to about this. I've been with Sky for just over a year so if you've had Sky for longer then expect a larger discount. The other suggestion he made was to cancel the Sky Tv packages we currently have, apart from the broadband, and take out a new subscription in my partners name at a reduced cost used to attract new customers. This would also mean that we receive all extra special offers, like shopping vouchers etc, but you do sign up to a new 12 month contract this way. I saved £70 on my annual Sky subscription by making a 10 minute phone call. RESULT

On reading the posts on this thread and being at the end of my current BT broadband package decided, after being a SKY customer for 15 years +, to give them a ring and ask for a deal........grumbled a bit about having full package (sports and movies),HD and multiroom but never being offered any discounts etc etc and said I was thinking of cancelling.

Passed through 3 departments and on the phone for 55 minutes  finally came away with:
:) free unlimited phone calls for 12 months

:p free line rental for 12 months

:D half price HD for 9 months .......if I transfered my phoneline and broadband from BT to SKY, which I was planning to do anyway (already had the mac number ready)!!!!.:rotfl:

Works out at nearly £250 worth of freebies from sky.

Also saved me over £300 a year on my current BT package price..........result I think. (I'm sure someone will let me know if I should have held out for more!!!!!! Although don't be too harsh this was my first time at trying to blag a deal;))

  • Hi all,

I am going to try and get a deal for my mum as she knows nothing! :P

Currently I think we are one a very small package. We have:

    2MB Broadband Internet
    Basic TV Package
    Line Rental

All with Virgin Media. And we pay around £20.00 per month for this and we have been with these for about 18 months now.

Question is.. We should be on more than 2MB broadband and we have standard everything.

How should I approach them when I ring them. What would be a good deal? I know we should be upgraded to at least 10MB internet alone. Could we get this cheaper? Could we get any money off or get things added on to our package?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please note this break my bartering virginity so please be gentle and advise best you can.

    Much appreciated.

Not an option for me unfortunately. Thanks though! I might just reinstate it then try cancelling again in a few months.

Further to this, I got a call from Sky about 10 days before my cut off date offering me my full sky package (I have all channels) half price for 12 months to stay with them. Result!

The down side was that they couldn't revoke my phone line/broadband cancellation request so that's been a nightmare trying to get sorted out. In the end I had to pay them £39 to set up a new line (which I'm still waiting for) but at least got half price line rental for a year to compensate for it. BT wanted c£120 but an 18 month contract, Post Office £110 (no contract) and Talk Talk £70 but a 24 month contract!!

At least overall I'm £321 better off though over the year! :D

Nick - we arent on the same package as you but this afternoon I phoned Virgin. We have L tv package and unlimited telephone and 10mg broadband. We wanted to upgrade to HD. They have upgraded us to XL tv package, free HD box, no installation fee. All for the same price as what we are paying now. They did have some cheaper packages available aswell. Go to the section on the phone menu "if you are leaving us". Good Luck
