I also got sky+ for free.

Only been a customer for just over 1 year, phoned up to cancel (would have re-subscribe for new footy season in August anyway), and was offered sky+ for 49 pounds. I said that's too expensive, and he immediately offered it for free including installation.

    Tied for a further 12 months - that's not a problem.

May I say a BIG thank you to all on here who have posted previously.

Earlier today I phoned Sky and explained that I was not happy as I have been with them for 7+ years, and the only freebie that I had ever received was two weeks access to the film and sports channels last december which was notified to me by a postcard/flyer that arrived one week into the freebie!!!

I explained that I was not really wanting to quit Sky, but was unhappy that others were getting free Sky+, and some were getting discounted subscriptions like a neighbour of mine.

Anyway the lady who I spoke to said that my account was showing that I was not entitled to any discounts. I could either talk to sales re. upgrades to Sky+ or cancellations to discuss my options. I choose cancellations.

Having explained all of the above to the guy in cancellations, he said the free upgrades/discounts were only usually offered to those taking extra packages e.g. Phone and Broadband. I explained that I was under contract to another company for these until Mar '09.

He then said that he accepted my situation, and would talk to a manager about a free upgrade to Sky+.

Yippee, didn't realy push to cancel, and explained that I didn't want to cancel, but just moaned that I had received no benefits from Sky in the time I had been with them.

Anyway have an engineer coming to install on Thursday.:j :j :j

To those who have gone before me, I salute you. To those who are reading and wondering what to do, especially if you don't wanna cancel, but just try to get a free upgrade - go on do it, give it a go!

By the way it took me 27 mins on the phone so don't call an 0845/0870 number especially if you get calls to 01 numbers included with your phone package. I phoned on 01506421825 and got through to the Customer Service centre after pressing 1 for this, 2 for that etc.

    Hiya,
I recently rang virgin to cancel my BB (2mb), phone (unlimited) and tv (XL) as had been paying £48.45 per month and they offered me this deal,
Same packages as I'm on now but for £34.95 per month only thing being I'm tied to them for another year, is this a good thing saying as sky seem to be cheaper and reading on hear are giving free sky+ boxes. I have 2 days left to cancel this deal if I'm not happy, but not sure what to do. What do you think?
    Thanks x

I would leave for that price, you can get this for £34

    Sky TV - £34
    1 Entertainment Mix - Variety,
and 1 Premium Mix - Sports, or update the order summary page with your own choice.
    Sky Talk Freetime - Free
Free UK¹ evening & weekend calls
    Sky Broadband Base - Free
    Up to 2Mb* download speed

I believe you can only get the sky + box free if you threaten to cancel sky subscription, but if you give them a call im sure you can get some kind of deal on the whole package. Give them a call anyway and see what they offer.

see below: (whoops, yeah your right, add a tenner on that.)
  • Don't forget you need to add the cost of BT line rental onto the cost of that Sky deal

Thanks to others on here I decided to phone Sky this morning in a bid to get a free Sky+ box. I used the number posted above and two calls and 40 odd minutes later I was offered free Sky+ and free installation. Initially I was told that it would be 209pounds for the sky+ but after a long rant about new customers getting it for free and being put through to the cancellation (retention) department the initial offer was 49 pound for sky+ but only if I took sky talk (which obviously I don't currently have and didn't want) despite me continuing to argue that even 49 pounds was too much the guy wasn't budging so I said I would need to speak to my partner and call back. I left it an hour or so and called back went through to cancellation department again and explained to the guy that I'd spoken to one of his colleagues earlier to which he replied "yes, I can see on the screen he offered you free Sky+" whereupon I explained that actually he hadn't and if he had have done I wouldn't now be calling back to cancel. He went away and checked with the manager (supposedly) came back after a few minutes and offered me free Sky+, without sky talk. I did tell him that I'd checked my BT contract and it ran till the end of the year so I guess this is why they dropped that arguement. My advice to anyone trying this with Sky would be that I feel you really do have to be prepared to tell them that you'll cancel and sound like you mean it, if they don't offer what you want straight away do try calling back and telling them that the original offer was no good so you will be cancelling and bear in mind that you might have to go through with it I suppose.
Many thanks to all who have posted their experiences on here, couldn't have done it without you!
