Digital TV Cost Cutting Article - Discuss What You've Been Offered

Hi Kevin
You can pick up a free to air Sat system quite cheeply, certainly less than the £300 you mentioned. I believe Lidl sold one a few months back.
There are absolutely thousands of free channels to be had out there, most are foreign language, Im afraid, although some do air in English.
This site http://www.lyngsat.com/europe.html will show you what channel providers are avaliable on each satellite. The most populated sats (and probably easiest to receive) are perhaps 13E Hotbird and 19.2E Astra. (Sky is on 28.2E for example.)
You can also buy viewing cards. One provider - Digitalb (on 16E) - shows prem footie on sat afternoons and up to date movies (mostly in english I believe) on 5-6 channels. I think the cards are about £100 ish for 6 months. You would, however need a receiver capable of accepting the viewing card.
(I'm not sure about the legal side of this - certainly the cards are readily avaliable from most satellite retailers - but might be worth checking out first)
If you are serious, there are many sat websites that can show you whats avaliable and how much. Hisat is just one of them. What Sat magazine can also help.

Frank_Wells wrote:I logged on to "Christianity Today.com" and found a site "http://www.inklineglobal.com/adsales/abc/tvo_offer_fire_abcnews.html?mcp=GB "that advertises 1000+ TV channels on your computor - for a one off fee of £20. With the appropriate cableing from PC to TV it sounds terrific -especially if you cannot recieve freeview.Has anyone got this up and running?

When I was complaining to the customer service person about the cost of the phone call he advised that if I wrote to the following person at the following address that I might be reimbursed. I haven't tried this yet as I only spoke to this rude invidual this week.
Caroline Conner (she is the head of something - sorry I didn't write her title down - I was breathing fire at the time)
SSL (stands for sky subscriptions - I think the L is for ltd )
4 Macintosh Road
Kirkton Campus

he said I should photocopy my phone bill and send it to this lady. This little upstart will rue the day he was rude to me!
I am a sky plus customer with 2 extra boxes in the house ( incl. movies and sports packages) paying 62.50 per month after reading the posts I am definitely going to make sure that this figure gets slashed.
God bless everybody that posts on this site.Lifes problems wouldn't be called hurdles if there wasn't a way to get over them!0 -

08007316965 is still available it takes you initially to an offshore call centre tell them you wish to cancel and then you get transferred to Scotland, at least if they keep you on hold they are paying!!!!!!!!!!

I currently have Tivo and am looking at changing my set up. As I have Sky, Sky+ is an option but like many people, I am loathe to pay their extortionate prices (particularly after 6 months ago, a friendly Sky customer service chap told me "we will get you sooner or later!" ... enough to rile anybody).
Is it possible:
a) to get the Sky+ box itself cheaper than the £199 Sky are charging
b) to reduce the installation fee (do they really have to instal or can you do it yourself? I wasn't aware that a new dish was required)
c) to reduce the monthly fee
Cheers

But FWIW I think your existing Tivo (especially if its a lifetime subscription) is better value, except you can't record a different satellite channel to what you are watching.0 -
i pay 36 pound a month to sky for sports pack , also get movies 2,4,6,8 , so phoned them today to cancel and test the water , via freephone number 08007316965 , had to wait 40 minutes to get to cancellations dept but well worth it , we can offer you upgrade to full movies +disney and the like for next 3 months for 21.25 a month , didn't even neeed to haggle , was simply polite and said did not think i was getting value for money .
also phoned telewest and queried the new customers getting 3 months free tv starter pack 5.50 a month . get my phone and internet from tw , and was given 3 months free tv from tw as well
total saving £55 approx
done a balance transfer and cancelled a £30 a month gym membership today as well ,
all in all a good money saving day .
can the freephone number be added to the top of the post

In November, I rang up Sky and threatened to cancel the World Package and was given the 50% discount for 3 months.
My question is....What is the best approach to get this continued at the end of Feb (and so on)?
Do I go back with the same argument. ie. its too expensive in comparison with Freeview or should I come up with another argument?
