The spec is good for the money and the 3 year warranty makes it better.
It's a yes at £300. Get in there early.0 -
Thanks Donnie and Bagboy, the Aldi one looks good. I think I'm going to go for it!!!
Another friend of mine is looking for a cheap laptop but has a budget of £200-230. I know this is pretty low but, is there anything that will give him good "bang for his buck?"
Thanks.0 -
Are those techfurb ones UK machines? i.e. UK keyboards... doesn't seem to say. Assuming so as it's Dixons/Comet.... just checking!0

It was available from the 25th of April. You aren't likely to find them everywhere.0 -
I've been back several pages through the thread, but can't find anything about an "ideal" spec for current laptops at this price point. The reason I'm asking is that SWMBO is finding that her laptop is now being usurped by the kids for their homework, so she's on the look out for another to do for work duties. She does basic internet, word processing, spreadsheets and presentations with embedded pictures and video (the last one probably stresses the PC the most, but they're of medical procedures (Yuk!) and are necessary), but no gaming. I realise that a basic laptop would do for now, but we'd like to keep it for a while, so we'd need to future-proof it a bit.
I realise that it's the same as "How long's a piece of string?", but what is the best spec to look for at the moment. I guess we're looking for 3-4Gb or RAM, at least 340Gb HDD, VGA webcam, WiFI (n) but I'm not sure about the current state of things such as processor (speed, cache, cores, etc), HDD speeds, etc. We'd rather go for a reliability (such as Sony (I wish) or HP/Compaq) rather than a "cheap" brand.
BTW, thanks to all for all the information in this thread, especially the deals out there:beer:Jumbo

Back again - looking for another laptop - got a Toshiba satellite L500-1XL a few months back and am delighted with it. My sis-in-law now looking for one for her 16 year old. Probably homework, internet and gaming - probably not in that order. Got mine off ebay argos outlet. They have 2 at the moment - some advice on which one would be most suitable - or alternative ....

Definitely not the ACER, as it doesn't have an optical drive.
The Toshiba doesn't have a webcam and microphone. So I would say no to both.0 -
Any opinions on this Dell laptop?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Dell-1545-Cherry-Red-15-6-laptop-/110595290786?pt=UK_Computing_Laptops_EH&hash=item19bffe36a2
My friend is looking for one as close to £250 as possible and needs one ASAP.
If anyone can recommend something better, I'd really appreciate it!
