My friend doesn't need a mic and webcam.

Donnie (or anyone else,) is the Medion a good deal if I he can install a Windows 7 upgrade?

He's pretty price conscious at the moment so cheap and cheerful could be the order of the day.

    Are electrical-deals.co.uk reliable?

    Thanks.

Of course it isn't cost effective if he has to pay for Windows 7.

I think the retailer is fine. There are on my list. I just didn't recommend the machine as it isn't cost effective to upgrade.
But if it suits your friend, then why not?

Apparently its an E525 '901' model. Has windows 7 but only 1gb ram. No webcam (although in this instance one would not be used by the person it is for.) Its for a complete novice computer user.

Obviously she would like a cheap deal but also would like a fairly easy purchase as well (which buying from the supermarket would be).

It's still a no from me. :) 2GB RAM would be a minimum requirement in my eyes.

not sure about the general obsession with webcams - have never used one for anything useful in years of computing - easy to buy a separate webcam for under a tenner so wouldn't be off by a lack of one.
Think that having less than 2 mb ram is fam more relevant to the running of the machine

That rather kicks the idea of portability into touch...purchasing a separate webcam and microphone. Rather I look at how at the overall value. If it came with Windows 7, I would recommend it regardless of the lack of webcam and mic.
But since it comes with Vista Basic and has relatively poor battery life, I left it off my list.

I have an Emachines E525, got it for Christmas and it was an ex display model. It was £329 and because it had been in the shop for a while it didn't have Windows 7 and the salesman said I could have an extra thrown in like a laptop case but because I'd never take it anywhere I said no. Eventually he agreed to throw in an iTunes voucher because I wanted one, I asked for £25 and I got £15 but ah well....
Savings £8,865.22 £/15,000 Aiming to save enough for a house deposit.

This Toshiba Satellite C650-1CN is a much nicer machine for £289. No webcam. :)

The eMachines laptop is just not a good start
