You are so right JDP!
Actually I had posted a thread question up earlier in the day and another helpful person, like yourself, gave quite a thorough answer to me and I've just replied to him saying that I'd try it with the 4GB first based on his response. You have now concurred with that so I'll try it and see. I won't be gaming on it so I might be ok.)

That's all my desktop has that I'm working on now, 2GB RAM.
I almost wasted a load of £££ around Christmas last year on a new cpu but you guys on here helped me to get rid of a load of carp and the machine now runs so much more smoothly and quietly (it was the noise that was driving me insane alongside crashing and the like!). I never had the b*lls to open it up and give it a thorough clean though. So my plan is to make disc/external drive copies of everything on here that is useful/I want to keep and then when the Tosh arrives take my cpu into work to get the tech guys there to clean up the insides.
I may well get Windows 7 put on it too and perhaps a couple of gigs of RAM and then I'll be set for a good few more years without having major expense. I presume having the same OS on both machines will make them more compatible when switching between them?
This cpu is running Vista and it says it's 32-bit. Does the 32-bit relate to the hardware or could this operate with a Windows 7 64-bit OS? The processor is an AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ 2.3GHz.
Apologies as I'm not sure this is the right thread for these questions.

Thanks TakeThis,
It's a Dell Dimension C521 (or Dimension DIMC521 as it says in the sytem properties window). If it's of any use it scores 4.2 on the Windows Experience Index. Thanks for your time.

Did you actually buy a new CPU or the whole tower, in the form of this DELL? The CPU fitted is standard and the DELL is not new if it's running Vista. Confusing.0 -
Anyway, yes it will run Windows 7 32 and 64 bit.0

Apologies as I'm very aware this is not the right thread for this.
This is my old DELL desktop I'm talking about. It is about four+ years old now. Once my new Tosh laptop (i5-2430M 4GB RAM Windows 7 64-bit) arrives I will take the DELL to work to get it cleaned inside. I was asking whether or not the 32-bit OS relates to the hardware of the system and whether I could have the OS upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit? Or perhaps there is a Windows 7 32-bit perhaps?
Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the help.
After much toing and froing between a Toshiba or an Acer I finally bought this Toshiba through Quidco with a £10 off code so the total price with delivery was £338.40. I will expand the RAM to 8 GB as soon as it arrives.
As usual great help came from the Techie Board, much appreciated.
Thanks and all the best,
Spigs

Thank you mwbrown, :T
As the order was still pending with P*xmania I cancelled it and have ordered with Dixons instead. Thank you for saving me £40.91. :money: I still went through Quidco so will get a miniscule 1.5% cashback but its better than nothing!
I had seen the Tosh in Currys and PC World but foolishly didn't check Dixons  on the basis that I'd looked at two out of the three and they both had codes off ultrabooks but not refurb lappys.
Thank you very much once again. :A
Take care,
Spigs
