Hmmmmmmmmm Acer, I`m a bit on the fence about them now. Son`s has been ok, but the one we have keeps overheating and shutting itself off, it started within the first year of having it. I do like the fact I can wipe them myself though.

a word of advice: just don't get the toshiba c660 as i Did after reading this thread. It has no wifi connection and has given me nothing but grief. Total waste of money.
All modern laptops have WiFi capabilities. I bet you've turned it off. Try Fn key and one of the F keys which has a sonar looking sort of icon (set of curved lines of varying sizes). That or a button or switch on the side of the laptop.

Quite a few i5s appearing now. Most over £350. Acer and Packard Bell don't have great reliablilty reports (but your mileage may vary as they say.)

Here's a Fujitsu i5-2450M that, after cashback and £10 voucher, is about £390

Or a Toshiba i5-2410M (no HDMI) for £350 (but is a £100 cashback deal which some may not like - MUST BE BOUGHT BY 30/4/2012)

Maybe we're just lucky but we have three Acer laptops and one Acer desktop in the house & no problems with any of them. My own, a brilliant little 11.6" TZ is a real workhorse that gets lugged around with me all the time. About the only complaint I do have is that the keys are very flat but you get used to them.

I have just found an Acer Aspire 5749-2338G75Mikk (15.6 inch) Notebook Core i3 (2330M) 2.2GHz 8GB 750GB DVD-SM DL WLAN Webcam Windows 7 HP 64-bit (Intel HD Graphics 3000). at Comet for £449.99 does this sound good ? It seems to fit what we need 8GB memory and 750GB hard drive, i3 processor but thought I was just ask for opinions who are wiser than myself. It`s not an ASUS which is what we were looking at at first, but the son`s ACER has been ok so am now veering towards this one.

I notice that one only has 4gb RAM though, the kids don`t play games on the laptop, they have other gaming machines so it`s just for me playing games on Facebook. In that case would the ones I mentioned with 8gb RAM be ok for me ? Sorry if I sould daft, but I don`t want to have to keep deleting things, especially photos off the laptop to free up memory all the time. I sell on ebay so like to keep regular item photos at hand.
I think you've misunderstood the techy terms. RAM is not what stores photos and stuff, that is the hard drive. RAM helps when running lots of things at once, though 4GB is plenty IMO and is easily upgraded in future if need be.

Good entry level laptop from Argos Outlet:

Toshiba Satellite C660-*** for £184.99. You'll need some extra RAM, in the form of this 2GB module for £8.88. Easy to fit in minutes.

That will bring it up to the spec of the Toshiba Satellite C660-2DV here Hit F5 if page has expired.

CPU Benchmark of 1361, so don't listen to the naysayers. It's a bargain.

    £193.87 in total.

Amazon gives you a good overview of the features available.

That poster has admitted to suffering from mental health issues, so I am not going to mock them.

Good value laptop for every day use.

Very happy with the machine. :j
