meant to add. when i go into "Network Connections" there is only one icon which says Local Area Connection and it says Connected. There used to be one beside it which said Wireless and it used to say Connected . Why is this no longer there. will it appear again when i get the wireless running ?0

it should do - if the router is working properly - but you can also disable wireless in the router settings - but the factory reset should turn it back on again.
Best to work one thing through at a time though and see if the router is working with a simple wired connection so at least you have a default gateway.Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -

well.we tried getting the wireless running but couldnt. we reset the router unplugged the modem etc and wired the modem to the router and the router to the pc. we configured the linksys upstairs .it said the laptops were connected with good strength but when we clicked on the internet explorer but it said cannot dispaly.....GRRRRRR
i am back on the modem to the pc as thats the only way i can connect to the internet
none of the 2 laptops can connect ???????
any ideas ?
i still cannot enter the ip address as on the earlier links. it wont connect ??????0 -
Hi
sorry you havent got it sorted yet, im still convinced its the encryption key thats the problem. have you tried pinning the IP addresses of the laptops from your base machine, you will get them from the ipconfig /all in a dos box then type ping xx.xx.xx.xx where the xx's are the ip adress."Well, that sounds like a pretty good deal. But I think I got a better one. How about I give you the finger, and you give me my phone call"

OK dont worry about the wireless for now - just try to see if we can access any part of the router setup with wiring it the PC through the router and then to the modem.
Once this is done and power is on then the router should show the lights as my photo from last night. if it doesnt try holding that reset button for about a 1/2 minute.
One thing that should happen is - if you are connected to the router and you pull the power lead out - your PC should display an arror message in the bottom right hand corner (a cable is unplugged etc etc)
Another thing you can check - iif you check your PC ip settings
START > Control Panel > Network Connections
If you right click on the connection icon then click properties.
there should be alist appear in the window. - scroll down to Connections TCP/IP and select properties again
see if obtain an IP address automatically has been selected.Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -

do you mean go into "run" on the laptop and key in "cmd" and then look at the numbers beside "default gateway" and then copy them to the browser and follow the instructions as above ?
the above makes me sound like a dozy blonde....thats the only way i can understand it tho0 -
my number at default gateway
and the number at ip address are different on the screen that comes up after cmd0 -
