Yes, I’ve got McAfee and it’s all up to date and I always scan every day and manually check for updates if it’s not updated. Also tried the tests mentioned earlier and said everything was very secure.

I’ve had a standard reply from Hotmail, basically telling me how to make my account more secure and to change my password! So I’m cancelling Hotmail now and I’m trying googlemail and will also look into your other suggestion.

Also changed my paypal password, just very wary now!

Im not saying you have anything nasty on your computer, but im my experience ~ Mcafee is a bit c*ap at detecting at times.
Just a thought but I do recommend using either AVAST or AVG (both free)
But if you do get rid of mcafee you would also need a decent firewall and a couple of 'spyware' programs wouldnt go amiss either(all free too)
All im saying is I wouldnt put all your trust in Mcafee if I were you!

Try looking into getting better security. Nobody really rates Norton or McAfee, and I can speak from personal experience at how McAfee is rubbish at both slowing down your pc and also more crucially actually misses viruses.

  • I'm really confused now!

What Firewall and spyware would you recommend if I got ried of McAfee? What do you use?

Only last week my friend was advised to get rid of Norton (as it was slowing her PC down) and use all the free stuff... AVG, Spybot but not sure which Firewall, then very next day PC got a virus so she's now gone back to Norton.

I personally pay for Eset Smart Security (I wouldn't touch Norton with a bargepole and McAfee has been available to me for free for years and still is but I'd not touch that with a bargepole either). On other people's PCs I install Avast or Antivir and Comodo for the firewall. I also install superantispyware.

Just think about what you said there for a minute
What you ACTUALLY said was she alread HAD a virus and the very next day avg detected it! (Avg can only detect viruses as and when it scans that part of the hard drive if theres one ALREADY on there!)
Use COMODO firewall. If you have a slow computer use AVAST anti virus or AVG if a quick one (I personally use AVG)
I also use SPYBOT and ADAWARE and I also recommend using FIREFOX with NOSCRIPT installed over using Internet Explorer.

Thanks, that's really helpful... I will look into it.

Yes, that could be possible, good point, I never thought of that!

Exactly, the fact an anti virus finds a virus is a good thing. It was how I found out that McAfee lets viruses through, because another AV found an infection. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, i.e. just because an AV didn't alert to a virus is not proof there wasn't a virus already there. And in this specific case if AVG was able to detect it in scanning then presumably it would have recognised it to prevent it installing in the first place. Definitely sounds logically like Norton is the culprit here (assuming wasn't a false positive).

if you really want to check your defenses go here and run some of there tests

    https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

used them for years and gives you an indication of which ports are in danger of attack ect. (they dont even try and sell you anything either!!)

I ran this today on my PC. All seemed to be well as it reported my computer was secure.

Immediately afterwards, I discovered that it had disabled Spyware Doctor ... and left it disabled after terminating

I then found that it had not only disabled Spyware Doctor, it had also changed vital settings in the program, as well as having changed some security settings in IE7.

The result was that nothing worked as normal and I couldn't even connect to the internet.   Oh, and the centre wheel on my mouse has just packed up ... possibly coincidence.

I carried out a system restore from a restore point made yesterday which seemed to clear the problems, but for peace of mind I've run a deep scan with Spyware Doctor and then Norton AV. Nothing reported thankfully, but it was a necessary waste of time.
