• It sounds very strange how you took it for repair and now this has happened. Where did you take it to?

And if it wasn't them, was your secret question answer the answer to your actual secret question? For example by secret question answer is a mix of numbers, letters and that. Not my favourite movie

@ The person saying Hotmail is the most "hacked" email and the person should move to gmail or something, thats because it is the most popular email provider, hence more users to "hack". ;)

Thats me and whilst your possibly right ive NEVER heard of a googlemail account being hacked from the outside! (Anyone can get a hold of a password mind) Your saying you have?
And even if your answers a 'yes' im pretty sure its going to be WAAAAAY lower than for hotmail ;) (even taking into account the ratio differences)
The only known ones (and if your stupid enough to do so) is using the 'community' sites like facebook etc and actually GIVE THEM YOUR PASSWORD (DUH!!)

I would have thought that the firewall on my router and windows firewall would be suffice?

I am not keen on having Mcafee or Norton installed as they both hog a lot of memory

Windows firewall is junk and the router barely blocks anything (If you dont believe me, install 'PEER GUARDIAN' and watch all those other mysterious ip addresses coming through!)

I HIGHLY recommend COMODO firewall (free)
When installing (If you choose to do so) just untick all the extra c*ap they try to get you to accept (And switch the defense off for now)
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html
Just allow everything it says is safe and leave the others for now (To try to determine if there IS anything nasty on your computer)

• if you really want to check your defenses go here and run some of there tests

https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

used them for years and gives you an indication of which ports are in danger of attack ect. (they dont even try and sell you anything either!!)

I had my e-bay and hotmail account hacked. The hackers started selling fake ugg boots from my account. Fortunately my password for paypal is totally different from my e-bay password and they didn't hack that, so they diverted the purchase money to a different paypal account, and to their credit, paypal spotted it, and phoned me to ask if I was selling these boots, and to tell me to contact e-bay.

At the time I was using a mixture of numbers and letters - I had the same password for ALL my hotmail accounts, but the only one that was hacked was the one I used for e-bay.

I changed all my passwords, and I also changed my e-mail address with e-bay for a different one (still hotmail, though) and that solved the problem.

To this day I don't know how my hotmail and e-bay accounts were hacked, but my PC was squeaky clean and no-one had access to it, or to my passwords, so I think the problem lay with e-bay. It seems to be a common problem and one that e-bay and paypal are aware of.

Just done that and it says:

Your system has achieved a perfect "TruStealth" rating. Not a single packet — solicited or otherwise — was received from your system as a result of our security probing tests. Your system ignored and refused to reply to repeated Pings (ICMP Echo Requests). From the standpoint of the passing probes of any hacker, this machine does not exist on the Internet. Some questionable personal security systems expose their users by attempting to "counter-probe the prober", thus revealing themselves. But your system wisely remained silent in every way. Very nice.

Its always nice to run it now and again, especially after a reinstall. To make sure your well protected.

Shame it doesnt work with Firefox (Doesnt on mine anyways)
IE came up with this ~ :p

1.gif Attempting connection to your computer. . .
Shields UP! is now attempting to contact the Hidden Internet Server within your PC. It is likely that no one has told you that your own personal computer may now be functioning as an Internet Server with neither your knowledge nor your permission. And that it may be serving up all or many of your personal files for reading, writing, modification and even deletion by anyone, anywhere, on the Internet!
reddash.gif Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!
One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion.
reddash.gif Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.
