Someone has hacked my hotmail account!-Advice please!

  • Hi,

I also had my Hotmail hacked yesterday too. I only realised when I checked my work email and noticed one from myself. Quickly logged onto Hotmail and they had set up a vacation message and spammed all my contacts, but not changed my password. I’ve now changed my password and spent last night changing passwords on all other accounts.

My ebay and paypal have completely different passwords, should I change these too?

I’ve contacted Hotmail, but as yet I haven’t had a response. I’m going to close the account, but not sure who to change to. Really worried and stressed about the whole thing!

You'll be lucky if you ever do get a response, we're not talking swathes of employees here for a non profitable part of the MS empire.

Try googlemail/gmail. Also don't dismiss the idea of actually paying for email. I have my own domain that I use for almost all emails (I give a unique address to every company, e.g. ebay@mydomain.co.uk, amazon@mydomain.co.uk). If my domain/pop3 email account ever got hacked at least there's a support number I could actually call immediately and have confidence it would be dealt with. I have free email such as gmail as well but I don't use it for critical stuff such as paypal, banking etc.

  • Thanks for the advice. I've changed the password on ebay, but very wary about changing paypal as it's asking for my credit card number before it will change. Is this right, can't understand why it's not asking the security questions? Just want to be sure!

So long as you actually typed paypal.com or paypal.co.uk into the address bar then it's almost certainly (unless your pc is completely infected, you have got security software?) the right website.

That actually DOESNT sound right(Though I could be wrong ~ but Ive just checked on another site which states that all that is needed is the original password for clarification purposes)! Are you ABSOLUTELY sure your on the genuine paypal site? ~

Microsoft have been pretty good. They replied to my last email in under a few hours. They want me to answer a few more security questions in regards to my messenger contacts and my xbox live account before they are able to let me reset my password.

When I changed my Paypal password it asked for either one of my cards linked to my account and my old password or my account number linked to my account and my old password. I went directly on www.paypal.co.uk.

Then you've been lucky and to be honest you're still going through the process so you've not had any resolution from them yet and you're still at the stage of getting most likely scripted bot responses. There are plenty of posters previously on here that never got anything from hotmail and in the end simply had to cut their losses with their hotmail account.

Yes, I’ve got McAfee and it’s all up to date and I always scan every day and manually check for updates if it’s not updated. Also tried the tests mentioned earlier and said everything was very secure.

I’ve had a standard reply from Hotmail, basically telling me how to make my account more secure and to change my password! So I’m cancelling Hotmail now and I’m trying googlemail and will also look into your other suggestion.

Also changed my paypal password, just very wary now!
