Someone has hacked my hotmail account!-Advice please!

Hi All,

I have no idea how this has happened. I scan my laptop weekly for any viruses/adware and I never ever click on any dodgy looking emails.

Anyway today I was unable to access my hotmail account as it keeps saying that I have tried to access it to many times and when I come to reset my password the security question is in chinese!!!!

I have now found out that my ebay account has been hacked as well.

I have contacted ebay using their live help feature and they have told me to email them, which I have done and I am now waiting for a response.

I have gone straight into my paypal account and changed the password.

I have also contacted microsoft to make them aware and hope that they contact me soon.

Is there anything else I should be doing? Has this happened to anyone before....what should my next steps be?

Thanks

  • Have a think of any saved passwords for other accounts in your hotmail account - go in and change the passwords on these accounts too.

DId you have a guessable password?

Have you entered your details into a site but it looked like it didnt work?

Do you have the same id/password for any other sites? If so change these asap

I am in the process of changing passwords to any sites that are linked to my bank details. My password was not guessable at all, mixture of capitals, numbers etc so it would no way have been easy to guess.

Hard to say how this has happened, could be any number of ways, but you should eliminate high risk possibilities, the primary high risk possibility would be that you may have a keylogger on your computer, ensure your AV has up to date definitions and run a full system scan.
Also I would suggest a second opinion scan with an online scan engine such as Kasperski or Trend Micro. Depending on how computer aware you are would also suggest you look at running processes in Task manager to see if anything unusual is running. Don't panic this is just a precaution, but better to be safe.

The only way I see this happening is ~
Either someones been on your computer or had access to your passwords
    OR
You have some spyware on your computer that someone is using to access all the information on it.
What security do you have on your computer?

I have run a scan using Ad-aware,spybot search and destroy and also AVG and Kapersky.

Someone did access my laptop. My laptop was sent off for warranty repair last week and they needed my password to access my account(install drivers etc)

That's good, likely your machine is clean then.

Its very much a possibility, however if I were to go to the police I would need proof that the person who repaired my laptop is the one who has hacked my accounts!

If they have a mind to both Microsoft and Ebay can determine when your password was changed, they would even be able to tell from which IP address.
