    I actually went for fun.....
I didnt tell her anything about myself, she wasnt local to me and I didnt know her from adam.
The first thing she said was I was trying to sell my house, that it was the most important thing right now, to do that, the reason being something to do with a red car, that I must not reduce any more, (all above correct and I have just reduced the price, to the minimum I can accept, 35k under, any other similar properties)
She also went in to the fact that my stepdad is in hospital and would be transfered to London, why he was there etc, (found out yesterday he is being transfered to London) amongst other very accurate things.
Believe it or not, that is wierd.
I am sure there are a lot of crooks out there, but she was spot on, on everything! Lets hope shes right about the house!

Yes, I think it is important to stress that, like you, our clairvoyant meeting was for fun. It was just a bit disconcerting because it was accurate, and not in fuzzy general ways. One or two are saying here that this flies in the face of science and logic, and I'd agree, but whatever it means, it doesn't imply the people we went to see had mystical powers; far from it.

How can I describe this? It's like a neanderthal person has found a car. They could learn the basics of driving quite quickly, even get other neanderthals from A to B, but none of them would have a clue about how or why the car worked. They might, of course, ascribe all kinds of mystical powers to the car, even use the car as a means to self aggrandizment; that's human nature. Yes, its just a car, but to them it's unknowable because they'd lack the science background.

I think we sometimes experience things we can't explain, so we give all kinds of handles to them, when maybe we should just accept that there are things we don't know yet. However that's not very satisfying for your average person, who wants answers, so there are also all kinds of charlatans and such like, hanging around, waiting to make themselves more important and, of course, richer by 'interpreting' for us.

I too am wary but as I said I just went along with my Mum, I had forgotten all about it, especially what she said about a house.

The thing that struck me was her description of family members, she knew a nickname my uncle used to call me this was a very unusual nickname (he died when he was very young) she also asked me if I had been looking at really old dresses (then said oh it is really old wedding dresses). In fact me and OH had a late night drunken discussion about getting married, a few days later (while a bit bored at work) I searched the net for vintage wedding dresses-just daydreaming. Had not mentioned it to anyone as it was a silly girlie fantasy, we are not going to get married til our housing situation is sorted (she said bringing it back on thread). So I was a bit spooked. She also said I would be moving house and described where and what the house was like and it was uncannily like the house we are interested in.

By the way still negoitiating on the house-will let you know if anything moves in that direction.

Good luck to all and have a nice weekend

Heard today that our chain seems pretty secure, that the FTB is a doctor and that he wants completion at the start of January, Just a survey to be done now. As it seems positive, we'll start introducing ourselves to renting agencies etc after I've read all about that on this site over the week-end.

Enjoy the good weather everyone. I always had to holiday around this time of year, due to work/business, and TBH it was usually OK.

OK I get what you are saying, but I'd just repeat that much of what we have found out about the world in, say, the last 150 years, would have been strange and, in a sense, 'unknowable' to those who came before. What science constructs for us at any given point in history is, at best, just our current understanding, or orthodoxy, which at some point in the future will be subject to change.

To think we know it all is dull. To think that we can understand it all is possibly optimistic. But I agree that to think we are just pawns in some cosmic chess game is a denial of free will, and too much reliance on the mystical can enslave rather than liberate.

But here we go into free will & determinism at 7 am.....and it's just too early in the morning. I'll just say I agree with you....... most of the time!

Wasn't William of Ockam an early victim of the Black Death in Oxford in c. 1350?

I have a feeling that he was a pupil of Duns Scotus, from whence the word "Dunce" comes. They had a serious disagreement over nominalism / realism.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Oh well, Think I upset the builder.

When we looked at the offer (I needed a calculator as it was complex (for someone as thick as me anyway)) I realised that we were to collectively take more than 40k reduction and he was not taking any??? so we would be paying 40k more for the house in a sense.

I had a chat with my finacial adviser today, who drew up a clear deal. We take a 45k reduction (collectively) from our asking prices he takes a 40k reduction from his. We benefit additionally from paying less stamp duty and no EA fees. This leaves us with a sensible LTV (a very good deposit) and managable monthly mortgage payments.

Obviously the % of the reduction for us is much higher. When I contacted the builder he said that he was not prepared to drop his price. I explained that in that case we could not proceed any further and thanked him for his time.

He then said he would consider this deal on one of the other (smaller) houses, which is no use to us. I said that this offer was our best one and only relates to that house and would be in place for another few weeks.

So the upshot is he has gone away to think about it.

I think I am being sensible and fair, would appreciate the views of you guys though.
