I guess it may be cheaper to get bread on prescription and I may go down that avenue but I would like to know if anyone makes edible bread using a breadmarker please?

Can't speak to the breadmaker, but my OH uses the prescription route, and it's massively cheaper than relying on Morrison's gluten free range. The bread is better too.

Under the prescription system, you can have X items per month; I think it's about 18. He gets a mixture of bread (8 loaves), pizza bases and pasta. It's all Juvela (sp?) stuff, and the bread and pizza bases are pretty good. The bread is fresh (not that vaccuum packed rubbish) and can be frozen. He even makes do with it for sandwiches for work.

If you pay per prescription, you pay for each different item. I.e. if you had 18 loaves of bread you'd pay a single prescription cost, but if you split it between bread and pasta you'd pay two. Far better though is the annual unlimited prescription card. It costs £80-90 I think, and then you get all your prescriptions for a year for free.

So that works out around £6-7 a month for 18 food items. Far better than the £1.75 a loaf from the supermarket.

Agree with Savvy above, the best bread by far is by Laucke, an Australian company who supply only to Lakeland in this country. So easy to make and has been a life-saver for my gluten-free hubby.

Very disappointed to find Lakeland have stopped stocking it ... at least for now. There are a few pleading letters on their website and I've emailed them about it and they're hoping to stock it again soon. On the lookout for a substitute now rolleyes.gif

Thanks for that. Can you make Glebe Farm bread without a bread machine? Haven't got one yet, which is a bit restricting at times. Funnily enough, I found this product/website last night and hope to try it.

I also found some interesting info. about bread/cakes, etc. which came out best at the first "Free-from Food Awards". It makes for interesting reading, with "Roley's" bread mix coming out best (seen this at Waitrose, very expensive at £4.50!). A highly commended buckwheat bread mix (Il Pane di Anna Buckwheat Bread mix) sounds interesting and can be bought online at £1.99, though delivery is expensive at £6.50, so you'd need to buy a few to make it worthwhile rolleyes.gif

Morrisons and M&S also get a mention.

Yes you don't need a bread maker - I just oven baked it.
I will have a look at that freefrom thing. I know M&S used to do a GF orange choccy cake which was really nice -But I'm on a diet now ;)

  • I forgot to buy any gluten free bread today and need some for the pack lunches tomorrow. I have a Morphy Richards breadmaker but it doesn't have a recipe for gluten free. Does anyone know if I use the normal bread recipe with gluten free flour will it turn out ok or do I need to adjust anything?

There are recipes for gluten free bread in the Panasonic recipe book - sorry don't know about the Morphy Richards. I lost my Panasonic book and searched their site and downloaded a recipe book including the gluten free recipes so you could try doing that with Morphy Richards. If I can find the link for the Panasonic recipes I'll reply again
