Just remind them of the "just say yes" policy of Starbucks. I've worked for Starbucks for 13 years and have always done my best to satisfy the requests of customers if I'm able. All they need to do is find an empty espresso bag (even a bin bag will do or better yet, take in your own bucket), pull the drawer out of the espresso machine, and fill the bag using a cup. I do it everyday for our customers as well as for my own compost bin.
If you're still hit with a refusal, ask for the manager or supervisor. If neither is available, take a comment card from the condiment bar. Fill in the comment card and mail it in - don't hand it in at the store as nothing will be done with it. Mailing it makes sure it goes directly to the corporate office and the store will be dealt with in an appropriate manner.0 -

Free Starbucks spent coffee grounds!
Great for composting!
Spent coffee grounds are complimentary upon request at Starbucks retail locations and are available year-round as they are generated. Grounds are packaged in reused coffee bags and sealed with the Starbucks Coffee Grounds as Compost sticker.
So all you Eco warriors get into your local starbucks!
I'm an MSE SLACKER!!!! Slap my bum.
