What's the deal?

It's possible for anyone with a BT line to get unlimited download broadband for £6.40 a month or even less if you are an existing o2 customers.

That's because o2 already offers the cheapest standalone unlimited broadband deal (see Cheap Broadband) at £12.20 a month with a speed of 8Mbps, or £7.20 for o2 contract or PAYG mobile customers.

Yet sign up to it before 9 Jan, via a special cashback site you can get £70 back, which over the year's contract effectively reduces it to just £6.40 a month or £1.50 a month for o2 mobile customers/

How the cashback works

Specialist cashback sites list retailers and product providers and get paid by the retailers if you click through to them, but importantly, if you're registered the then give some or all of this cash to you. For a full explanation read the Top Cashback Sites guide.

How to get the cash

• Step one. Get a cashback account
  
  Lots of sites offer cashback, but only Quidco is offering the full £70 (always check that's the amount you get, it can change). If you don't already then its free, but Quidco takes the first £5 you earn each year as its admin charge. So if this is the only cashback you earn all year, the total will be £65.

• Step two. Sign up for an o2 broadband contract
  
  Next, sign up clicking through Quidco for the unlimited download contract. You'll be asked for your BT phone number so a quick check can be made to see if o2's broaband service is available in your area. Plus, don't forget to add your o2 mobile number when asked, if you have one, to get the extra discount.

• Step three. Check the transaction has tracked, then wait
  
  Once you're all signed up, leave it a couple of days, and then log in and check that the cashback has 'tracked' - that is, that the transaction appears on the cashback site.
  
  One of the conditions of this offer is that you'll wait 60 days (so you don't try and cancel early to nab the cash) before you receive any payment, but you should nonetheless be able to see the transaction.
  
  If there's no sign of it you may need to get in touch with the cashback site, but read the full Cashback Sites article first.

WARNING! Cashback sites payouts aren't 100% guaranteed

As cashback sites rely on the retailers paying them, its never a sure thing until it's in your bank account. And occassionally there are tracking problems too.

Yet Quidco knows we're including this deal in the weekly email so there's nothing to suggest it won't work for the vast majority of people.

What does 'unlimited downloads' mean?

Most broadband packages have a monthly download limit c. 1Gb or 2Gb, which means you're only allowed to use a certain amount of data. For most e-mailers or web surfers this is fine, yet if you watch web TV (e.g. BBC iplayer), download music or play online games, you can use it up pretty quickly.

The o2 deal is unlimited, but like almost all other domestic packages, applies a 'fair usage' policy. The vast majority of people won't ever breach that but really heavy downloaders, and especially those using BitTorrents and other file sharing services may have their access restricted, or even receive a warning for excessive downloading.

What else do I get?

The deal also includes a free wireless router so if you have a laptop you'll be able to connect to the net anywhere in the house. If you don't have a wireless-equipped computer it'll work in the same way as a normal modem. Providers charge up to £40 for these, though it's possible to pick up a good model for under £20.

Non-o2 customers can cut the cost further

You can save by simply getting a Free o2 Sim and crediting it before taking up the broadband package, even without using any calls as then you count as an o2 customer.

Yet you have to top it up every 3 months with £10 so the overall savings if you dont use the calls would be an extra £20/year (£1.66/month)

I cannot get 02 Home Broadband as I live out in sticks (or so it would appear) and the exchange has not been un-bundled. What do you think the chance of receiving the cash back is if I sign up for O2 Home Broadband Access at £17.50/month?

Hi all, just to vouch for O2 broadband. i've been with them for about a year and the service has been brilliant. The main thing for me is the free 24hr technical support/customer service. I know my last service provider used to charge premuim rate for this. Plus I got a free wireless router, my last SP wanted to charge me for this again. It's not often I rave about a service, I'm usually the first to complain, but the broadband from O2 has been fab. i'm not leaving in a hurry!!!

p.s. forgot to mention in my last post, my mother in law who's on o2 PAY AND GO rang and said she was leaving and wanted her PAC code. She was told if she topped up £10.00 per month on her pay and go phone and did so every month for 12 months, she would get free o2 broadband for a year. shes now 3 weeks in and it's free, Plus she get's to keep the £10.00 each month on the phone........ dont know if they are still offering it but for free broadband, it's worth a try, just say you want to leave and ask for free broadband

Signed up with O2 some months ago via the Quidco site and was offered £25 cashback. However, 6 months later still no money because O2 didn't give me the appropiate reference number for the order so they have refused the cashback.

I have O2 and the service is great and customer service is brilliant, worth noting with the free router you need to buy their USB wireless dongles to use laptops that aren't wireless - or so I was told by tech support anyway BUT they talked me through how to set-up my netgear router with their settings and it all works fine.

I recently took out the mobile broadband which includes 12 months free home broadband and with the £60 cashback makes me a nice little saving

I doubt this. You do not need to use their dongles for desktop computers so I see no reason why this should be required for laptops.

Alternatively you can, of course, just use the included ethernet cable.

Hi all, I am with Virgin media paying £20 a month for telephone and also broadband (plus freeview channels).

I have an O2 mobile phone. Just wondering how easy it is to move to O2 broadband, and if other Virgin Media customers have done it for the £60.00 cashback - worth the move?

Hi h007,

I can only see that Topcashback's offering between £45 and £65 for broadband AND mobile purchases, otherwise it's between £25 and £35 for just the broadband.

If I've completely missed it please let me know and I'll add it into the top post.

Just rang tiscali to get a MAC code so I code move to O2 broadband and they offered me 6 months free and then only £4.99 a month for the same service that they've happily charged me £17.99 a month for!
I really should phone all companies on an annual basis and tell them I'm thinking of leaving and see what they offer.
